Why did you decide to study abroad with Go ED?

Rachel: I decided to study abroad with Go ED. because of their justice-based focus that relates to all students, regardless of one's major. The program takes the passions and skills that each student has, and helps the students to utilize them in ways to make a positive difference in the world, regardless of the culture they are in. I also appreciated that they are a faith-based program, because I knew that some of the course content and injustice issues would be difficult to face and process, and I wanted to understand how God fits into all of it. Basically, I wanted to attend a program in which I would be stretched and challenged to be a better person in this world both now and in the future through my relationships, actions, and ability to connect cross-culturally.

What made this study abroad experience unique and special?

Rachel: There are many special aspects about the Go ED. program. I think one that makes it particularly unique is the degree in which the professors, directors of the program, and the Student Life Coordinators (our group leaders) were invested in each and every one of us. Since the program is on the smaller end (my semester had only six students), we were able to really get to know one another as we shared classes, traveled and ate together, shared moments of joy and laughter, and processed through difficult realities with one another. Forming relationships is a huge value for Go ED., and they intentionally continue beyond the duration of the program. Every new student accepted into Go ED. becomes a part of a new family.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Rachel: Studying abroad with Go ED. opened up my eyes to new and creative ways in which I can combine my two passions - art and nursing - and use both to make positive differences in the lives of those suffering from injustices. While I still do not know exactly what that may look like as a career, I have a general end goal that I would like to work towards. I think one of my biggest takeaways from the program is the importance of being an artist with my whole life, and to creatively engage with those around me as I build relationships and use what I am good at to better the lives of others. Furthermore, the program deepened my faith substantially, and showed me how much bigger God is than what I had previously thought as I saw Him at work in another culture.

What is one piece of advice you would give future Go ED - Thailand students?

Rachel: One piece of practical advice I would give to future Go ED. students is to try and learn basics of the Thai language before going abroad. While Go ED. offers some informal Thai lessons, it is fairly minimal (unless you take it upon yourself to study more in-depth with a tutor). I found that the Thai people love it when foreigners try to learn their language, and it can more quickly engage you with the culture, form relationships with the locals, and help you with navigating public transportation and ordering food! It's a tonal language and gets pretty tricky, but having a basic idea of what to expect can be very helpful. Another piece of advice - Thai food is delicious, but can get pretty spicy, so try building up a spice tolerance before you go!
