Why did you decide to study abroad with AIFS Study Abroad Program at Stellenbosch University?

Daniela

Daniela: I decided to study abroad through AIFS at the University of Stellenbosch mainly because of the service learning program offered through the University. I have done a lot of volunteer work through out the years and I wanted to incorporate that into my abroad experience. I choose South Africa because I wanted to go abroad someplace more original and unique to anywhere I had ever been before. AIFS also offered a lot of interesting courses through the University of Stellenbosch that I was interested in taking.

What made this study abroad experience unique and special?

Daniela: What made this program so unique and special was the people, the program, and South Africa itself. I was lucky enough to live with three other girls who I made an instant connection with. The other members of my group were adventurous and fun, creating a really strong group dynamic.

The program director Hestea de Wet and her assistant Janien du Plessis were wonderful and cared for all of us individually. They made sure we had the best experience possible and took the time to get to know each member in the group. South Africa as a country is beautiful and one of a kind. There is no place in the world that I have been like South Africa. There is such a rich and diverse culture, landscape, cuisine, fashion and nature.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Daniela with her buddies

Daniela: The entire experience has impacted my life for the better. The work I did through the service learning program taught me so much about community engagement and how to interact through working with communities versus for them. I learned how to be independent living on my own, managing my own food, money and time. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and made friends with those I probably would not have before. I value my friendships so much with those I met abroad and I also value my relationships at home more. I reached out to make local friends that I hope to visit some day.

I think about South Africa every day and it plays such a huge role in my life through global issues, relationships and opportunities for my future. I plan to go back after I graduate and hopefully fulfill my graduate degree at the University of Stellenbosch and attain a masters in nutrition.

Describe your favorite must-have food that you tried abroad.

Daniela with her buddies

Daniela: My favorite must have food in Stellenbosch was Stroopwaffels! They are a thin, waffle like cookie made with a caramel honey filling. They make them fresh at the Saturday slow-food market at Oude Libertas Vineyard, which is a must-go!

Did you forget to pack something important? Did you feel as if you were missing something?

Daniela: The one thing I didn't prepare for or pack was fall clothing. I honestly didn't think it would get cold, but in May and June it was getting cold and rainy. I wish I had brought a light-fall jacket and some boots.
