Tell us a little about blueEnergy and your role at the company.

blueEnergy connects the most isolated poor to renewable energy, clean water and sanitation solutions. We believe in developing global leaders capable of tackling complex global issues and committed to working for a more equitable, sustainable world. My role as Development Officer is to oversee blueEnergy's Global Leadership Program from the US side and support the individuals and groups that participate in our programs.

How did you get involved in the volunteer industry?

Being "of service" is an idea that I was raised with - one that my mother instilled. After college I completed a one year Americorps program. That was in 2001, and it certainly gave me insight to the real impact volunteers have on the lives of people communities in need. blueEnergy creates this type of impact, and really our staff and volunteers are the catalyst. For me, the work is a natural fit.

What makes blueEnergy unique?

We work on the edge. blueEnergy is first-in, and we go in to areas where there are no roads, no markets, and few services. blueEnergy has the unique ability to assess needs, build long lasting relationships with communities, figure out what will and won't work, and implement projects accordingly. We have been in the field for 8 years - working on the ground every step of the way.

In your experience, what characteristics make a good international volunteer and how do you choose volunteers?

Flexibility and a willingness to learn is important. We want volunteers seeking a meaningful, life changing experience in an area of the world where 75% of population lacks access to energy and clean water. We choose volunteers that are able to work in challenging contexts. A positive attitude, good sense of humor and love for the human spirit is also appreciated!

What does the future hold for blueEnergy?

blueEnergy is looking forward to filling the future of the most isolated poor with energy, clean water and sanitation solutions. By 2016 we hope to train and inspire 1,000 global leaders.
