Why choose Academia Uruguay?

Founded in 2007, Academia Uruguay is a Spanish language school located in Montevideo's historic center, one block from Plaza Matriz, on the top floor of a restored heritage building. It holds accreditation from the Instituto Cervantes and official recognition from Uruguay's Ministry of Education, and serves as Uruguay's leading language school for international students.

Intensive group and individual courses are offered for all proficiency levels (A1–C2), alongside specialized programs including Spanish for teachers, courses tailored for Portuguese speakers, Spanish combined with tango lessons, and volunteer opportunities. Group classes are kept small, with dedicated support from teachers during and after class hours.

Students learn Rioplatense Spanish with a distinctly Uruguayan accent, using voseo and a softer regional pronunciation — fully standard and easily understood across Latin America and Spain. Cultural immersion activities.

I fell in love with the entire staff

I was a student at Academia Uruguay for several months, taking both group classes and private lessons. It was a good mix. The group classes provided a solid basis in all aspects of the language. In the private lessons I really learned how to talk. The program is not leisurely. It rewards commitment. The flip side of that is a very high teaching standard. I had classes or lessons with most of the teachers, and never a bad one. But I fell in love with the entire staff: teachers, administrators, support, all of them.

What was your funniest moment?
On a group visit to the Museo Blanes, I pointed out the portrait of the woman whose ghost (as we learned in class) purportedly haunts the building. Our guide told the story to the group, which included two women from Brazil. One of them charged over to take a photo of the painting while the other followed demanding almost hysterically that her friend not take a picture of a ghost.
