The Baywatch Project

Why choose The Baywatch Project?

The Baywatch Project, combined with Raggy Charters, is a marine eco-tour company, specializing in whale, dolphin and penguin watching cruises, combined with a marine conservation project in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. We contribute to on-going research in the area on the marine life here and help to educate others about the need for marine conservation. Our volunteers would be doing a lot of hands on work, from learning about the marine environment, learning how to drive and maintain boats and assisting us with our on-going observations and data input. We help out with various research projects which change throughout the year. The main one being a very important project which is hoping to stop the decline in African penguin numbers along our coastline - mainly the breeding colonies on St. Croix and Bird Island.

Amazing Marine Conservation Experience in South Africa

I had a really great time with The Baywatch Project! A marine conservation project located in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I got to learn all about the marine environment and the different animals we get around the South African coast from a man who's been in the industry for 20 years now and has an incredible passion for it. I got to assist with African penguin research that was being done at the time. This research is looking into the reasons for the decline in their numbers (70% in 10 years!) and involved things like boat surveys, beach surveys, tagging penguins and monitoring fish populations. I also got to assist with their whale watching tours and help them collect data by collecting fin identification photos and record information about the animals we saw. A really life-changing and interesting experience that others who are interested in the marine environment should try!

What would you improve about this program?
There weren't that many volunteers so they need to do some better advertising as this is such an amazing experience there really should be some more volunteers involved to help the full time staff on all of their projects!
