Bustan Qaraaqa

Why choose Bustan Qaraaqa?

Located in Betlehem in Palestine, Bustan Qaraaqa is a permaculture non-profit farm that promotes environmental sustainable and creative solutions for local communities to the dry climate and food and water insecurity that Palestine is upon. The farm where staff and volunteers are living is also the research and experimental center. Here many of the ideas and solutions are tested, and later presented and implemented at our local community partners.

We welcome all volunteers to join us at Bustan Qaraaqa. Whatever your abilities, age, or nationality, we will love to have you here, but also the farm can offer internships for students within environmental and agricultural studies.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Bustan Qaraaqa in Palestine?

I looked for an internship abroad and since other organisations did not reply, I searched the ETH-website and found this project. The issue awakened my interest so I tried it. As you see, I didn’t plan to go to Palestine in the beginning.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

There is no typical work day. Normally we worked two days "off site", which means together with land owners, and three days „on site“, on the farm in Beit Sahur. There we harvested olives, pruned olive trees, filled bags with soil, planted trees, etc. „Off site“ I worked together with local farmers and helped planning permacultur projects.

What made this experience unique and special?

The location. Palestine is such a diverse country, in both cultural and ecological way. I traveled around a lot, also to Israel, and learned a lot about the people and the nature of this region. The two days off allow you to get to know the region by yourself.

How has this experience impacted your future?

I can't tell anything about the impacts this internship had on my future career. But I think, that every stay abroad makes your curriculum vitae more interesting. Personally I was able to learn a lot for my future. The Arabic culture is different in so many ways and the people I met showed me a different point of view of several aspects of life.
