My experience

Joining AmeriCorps was the best decision I could have made because it lead me to the career path I am in today. I am a school counselor for the Federal way school district. My AmeriCorps experience was fun, beneficial and humbling. I was able to work with students build strong relationships but also learn key life skills. I was able to be a trusted adults that the scholars would go to if issue arise. I was able to advocate for them and show them what it looks like for someone to advocate for them. I was able to give back to my community that I grew up in.

Pros
  • Learning about the community
  • Giving back to the communities
  • Working with scholars
Cons
  • Trainings

FWPS AmeriCorps

The AmeriCorps program and the students I worked with over the year helped form who I am as an educator today. Not only was I able to connect with the community, but I was also able to learn about what it meant to work in a classroom and support a variety of students. The AmeriCorps program also supported me in learning more about social justice and the importance of community. All of this being said, without the AmeriCorps program, I do not think I would be able to be the same educator I am today as it showed me the importance of paras and extra folks from the community to uplift our students and get them to where they need to be.

Pros
  • Education Award
  • Working with youth
  • Extra learning opportunities
Cons
  • Pay is somewhat low (but keep in mind the education award)
  • Waking up early
  • Having to work on half days
