Unforgettable Experience

This program offered me an amazing opportunity to see patients undergoing physical therapy in multiple clinics around Merida. It was wonderful to see the different types of therapy used by each clinic and feel appreciated by the patients who began to recognize me after seeing me multiple times. The excursions were fun while still being informational, and the food was delicious and different from what I was used to eating back in the United States. The small group of students better helped me get to know everyone personally and made us feel closer to one another.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers would be to be kind and engaged with the people you meet inside and outside the clinics. Even though most people will he speaking another language, smiling and trying your best to speak their language shows that you care and will help them remember you better!
Pros
  • The hotel was beautiful and had amazing food.
  • The therapists were all very nice.
  • The food was delicious at every place I ate at.
Cons
  • The uneven number of students made me have to have a room to myself while all my other members got a roommate, which made me feel like I was missing out on having a roommate to spend time with when I wasn’t with the rest of the group.
  • I underestimated the amount of money needed to cover food and transportation for all 3 weeks, so I definitely had to cut back on how much money I was spending towards the end so I could make it through.

Amazing Program!

This is truly an amazing program lead by people who care about students and the importance of global perspectives. Me and 6 other students spent our time at Merida Yucatan, MX where we gained 75 verified observational hours shadowing licensed physical therapists in diverse and hands-on clinical settings. Cultural immersion was a pivotal theme in our time in Merida learning about the different yet important components physical therapy has to offer across borders. We also had the opportunity for weekend guided excursions to cenotes, Mayan ruins ,and local landmarks . This program not only created lasting friendships but also built my initiative, adaptability and global perspective necessary for my future in Physical Therapy! I’d highly recommend to anyone interested @nomad.physicaltherapy
