OTIONOS

Why choose OTIONOS?

OTIONOS volunteer marine research assistant program offers a non profit on-the-ground resource for the department of environment and maritime affairs (DEMA) representing the TCI government to track changes in the marine environment, evaluate the effect of increased tourism and assist management strategies for the Islands’ greatest resource, the marine environment.

Our marine conservation programs are based in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands and are highly focused on conducting practical research with conservation effect. Very small groups of volunteer research assistants provide the financial and human resources to complete the survey team. 80% of all generated monies are used directly to tackle critical marine issues in an area with growing environmental pressure from tourism.

LEARN, CONSERVE, IMMERSE YOURSELF. Make a difference with your tourism.......

Changing the future of human interaction with humpbacks

I am thankful to have seen firsthand the work that OTIONOS is doing to educate people about humpback whales. Their work will be pivotal in shaping the way that the tourism industry moves forward.

Otionos Research intern 2013

I had the unique opportunity of experiencing the Otionos Humpback Whale research program earlier this year. There are many things that were great about the program and much was learned about the Humpback species, Megaptera. On a day by day basis the project would present logistical challenges and often physical effort in operating the research vessel and coordinating the research in general. Working out of the remote Salt Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands was a great pleasure due to its natural beauty but with that oftentimes had difficulties as with other field based research, such a food drops and equipment supplies. However, Otionos took these difficulties in its stride and provided a superb allround research internship with excellent scientific value and purpose. I have taken on what i learned and applied it to what I am currently involved with on an different conservation initiative, also in the Caribbean. Overall I couldn't rate my experience with Otionos any higher.

What would you improve about this program?
Due to the remote nature of the project it isn't easy but newer updated equipment and research boats would make a huge difference to the success of this excellent project, maybe with the right kind of funding they will be already starting this process.
