Why choose Surf N' Impact?

BUSUA BEACH GHANA

Surf & Impact is a progressive development volunteer program that gives participants the opportunity to volunteer, surf, and experience the historical sites and cultures of Ghana.

Volunteers, master thesis students and Interns who are admitted into the program live in a small indigenous coastal community in the Western Region of Ghana and support sustainable environmental, economic, and social development projects in diverse positions. These development programs are coupled with surf camp that gives volunteers the opportunity to surf in their free time and/or learn to surf with trained instructors.

Volunteers who apply to the program are given a variety of volunteer opportunities in Busua to choose from. The Surf & Impact program has carefully identified organizations and associations within Busua that could benefit from volunteer collaboration and facilitation.

Teaching in Busua

My name is Koen Schippers and I've been teaching English and mathematics at the primary school at Busua for 6 weeks now. I must say that it is a great exprerience to see how the Ghanian education system works, but it can also be hard to watch because the education system is so different from Europe. The programe is well organised by Ebenezer and he is a great guy who always makes sure that you are okay!

What position do you hold at Surf & Impact? What has been your career path?

I was the Volunteer Coordinator and now am the Program Manager. My career path is to bring more to the Busua community to work on various projects and make a positive impact in the community and the surroundings towns.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I really enjoy planning and organizing programs/projects especially placing of volunteers and checking on them to see how their project is going. Infact I really enjoy working with different people with different cultural background as well as meeting new people and making new friends.

What makes Surf & Impact's programs so unique?

Surf & Impact provides more than just the typical volunteer experience. Volunteering and working on development projects in Busua is only just the beginning. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to spend time surfing the waves at the local beach by participating in a surf camp with trained surf instructors.

This combination of a volunteer program and surf camp is a model that is currently being used in other parts of the world, but this will be the first of its kind in Ghana and West Africa.

Furthermore, volunteers will be participants in a cultural exchange alongside community members, whereby they will be immersed in the local community. Activities will also be provided to introduce volunteers to local customs and to visit nearby attractions.

Our goal is that volunteers not only leave feeling like they accomplished great things but also that the community acknowledges the hard work and dedication of each volunteer.

What is your favorite story of a volunteer's experience with a Surf & Impact program?

I have had numerous great experience with Surf & Impact Program but my favorite was when I placed a volunteer to set the Busua Plastic Recycling Center,though he had few challenges but the work was perfectly done.
