Why choose A Tree That Grows ?

A Tree That Grows works exclusively in Tanzania with an NGO that empowers women with disabilities. You get connected to an online pre travel program where you design a tailor made project, receive language lessons and access cultural master classes from the country.

You then design an in country volunteer travel experience personalized for you, where you implement your project with the community partner & access exclusive cultural events.

After the volunteer experience you are linked to an alumni network where you'll get lifetime access to a community of other Fellows, monthly content and updates from A Tree That Grows & the community partner.

A Trip that Changed Everything!

How do you describe a trip that changed most everything? I volunteered with A Tree That Grow because I knew that I wanted to support children in Tanzania who were living with a disability to be more included in the classroom. I worked with the team to design an informal reading assessment for youth to help a teacher see where their students were at with their reading.

Before I left for Tanzania I signed up for the 2-month virtual program where I got Kiswahili lessons and learned about the amazing culture!

Tanzania took my breath away and it completely changed my life. When I got to Tanzania I was able to help the organization train teachers on the reading assessment, help students learn their reading levels and work with FUWAVITA to share this assessment with schools in Tanzania.

It was a once in a lifetime experience & I would recommend it 100% and I can’t wait to go back.

Amazing opportunity to make an impact

Tanzania is incredible & so beautiful.

I knew I was passionate about special education, but I didn’t know how much the children we were working with would move me!

They brought me so much joy. I felt like I was part of the community. My favorite part was making recycled toys and building inclusion through play.

My project worked on building a community for children living with a disability through play & I am excited that it will also be shared in more rural areas.

Once in a lifetime experience that I'm so glad I had!!

I would do this again in a heartbeat

I worked with A Tree That Grows to design a project to build leadership skills for women entrepreneurs living with a disability in Tanzania. Before I went to Tanzania I worked with the community partner to learn about the challenges & design the project. This was an awesome opportunity to get to know Tanzania before I traveled.

When I was in Tanzania I felt like I was with family! It’s clear they have deep connections as I never felt unsafe & everything was taken care of. They organize amazing weekend trips and have a seriously cool volunteer retreat where you can pop in to relax, learn Kiswahili & explore the culture. I got to personalize everything, which was great, and present the project to leaders in the field of disability activism in Tanzania. I'm excited to now get into the alumni network to keep in contact with partners and see the impact of the project over the long run!

If you get a chance, definitely do this!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of all the pretravel programs and remote language and cultural sessions! There is nothing quite like going to a country with a project you have personally worked on.
