My impact week experience

I had the privilege to participate in the Impact Week program at TSIBA Business School. My group and I chose the stream that involved looking at long term sustainable and innovative strategies to help improve our local communities. We ended up coming up with a sustainable composting system idea that could be implemented in schools and homes as well as implementing a culture of reducing, reusing and recycling. Impact Week really gave me the opportunity to think differently and to expand my mindset on how to approach various challenges. It helped me develop my entrepreneurial mindset. This program also taught me how to network and build strong cross cultural connections which expanded my social circle.

What was your funniest moment?
The funniest moment to me was when my group and I brought in a blue PVC tank that was part of our prototype, it was huge and everyone was so fascinated yet intimidated that it caused everyone to want to remake their prototypes just as big and bold.
Pros
  • Networking with different types of people from different countries
  • Building bonds with students from my institution, we ended up being great friends after
  • Building cross cultural communication skills
What other participants should know
  • The limited time we had to finalize everything
  • Changing some parts of our prototype due to limited resources
  • Trying to quickly grasp a design thinking mindset within a tight time frame

Would reccommend!

I participated in this program as a student from Northeastern University. The program is one week-long and oriented around working with local entrepreneurs. I had such a great time getting to work alongside the TsiBa students. This program was an excellent way to meet locals, learn more about South African culture, and develop a stronger understanding of business and entrepreneurship. I would recommend this program to anyone interested in business looking for a week filled with learning and fun!

A Journey

This South Africa immersion experience transformed the way I view leadership, faith, and cross-cultural connection. From deep conversations with local students to sharing my testimony during the wilderness retreat, I learned that leadership is about vulnerability, presence, and listening well. The philosophy of Ubuntu—"I am because we are"—was lived out daily, especially in Langa and at Tsiba, where business and community were inseparable. The retreat helped me realize the power of stillness in leadership and showed me that authentic influence flows from intimacy with God. I leave this trip forever changed, with lifelong friendships and a renewed passion to lead with love, prayer, and cultural humility.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
One of the most nerve-racking moments was sharing my personal testimony during the “fishbowl” session on the wilderness retreat. I felt the weight of spiritual vulnerability and wasn’t sure how others would respond. But as I surrendered that fear to God and spoke from the heart, I felt His peace rush over me. The encouragement and tears that followed reminded me that vulnerability is a bridge—not a barrier—and that God works through our openness.
Pros
  • Deep cross-cultural relationships that sparked meaningful dialogue and lasting friendships
  • Personal growth in spiritual leadership and vulnerability
  • Exposure to Ubuntu and relational business models that will shape my future career
What other participants should know
  • Limited downtime during the immersion portion of the trip
  • Lack of communication in attacking school related tasks
