Vervet Monkey Foundation

Why choose Vervet Monkey Foundation?

The Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF) is a non-profit organization (#020 694 NPO) established in 1993. Our centre is based in Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. We rehabilitate and provide sanctuary to over 600 primates, orphaned, injured, abused, ex-laboratory or unwanted pets. We offer an opportunity for volunteers to study the life style and environment of the vervet monkey primate species, to become involved in the conservation and rehabilitation of this unique indigenous primate. We are also a sanctuary for primates unfortunate enough to be un-releasable but still able to have a quality of life with a program to rehabilitate orphaned and injured primates.

Amazing experience

I really enjoyed my time at VMF, I spent there 3 weeks last autumn.
During this unusual vacation, I learned a lot about monkeys and their behaviour.
I had the opportunity to work with babies, see their integration and I could help where needed.
I also met many interesting and enthusiastic people from all over the world.
I would recommend this place to anyone who loves animals and wants to spend time in nature and does not mind to stay in simple conditions. The volunteer village is without electricity, but it was absolutely ok, people can charge their devices in the cottage.

I will definitely come back one day!

Pros
  • close contact with animals
  • friendly environment
  • quiet place in nature

Vervet Monkey Forest

My experience at the VMF was very varied! On one hand you get to know so many new people from all over the world who are your friends but also colleagues, but you also get to know yourself in a whole different way, because you are doing something new in a different environment. On the other hand you get to work with monkeys which is something really exciting and beautiful. For me the best thing was to see my impact on the monkeys. Seeing the sick ones you help getting better throughout the time or the babies that are learning new things everyday until they are completely able to manage everything on their own.
All in all it was a wonderful challenge and I would recommend it to everyone who wants to help the monkeys and is open for a new adventure!

Pros
  • - you get to know yourself in a whole new way
  • - it's a whole new unknown and fun experience
  • - it's something you will never forget
Cons
  • - not really a con but you are living with the bare minimum so it's a little bit of a challenge

What a wonderful experience!

It was an unforgettable experience I would not want to miss!! I joined the VMF in august which was a pretty quiet time (no babies = not many volunteers but still enough work to do) and that’s why we didn’t have many social evenings together which was a bit sad. Thanks to Aaron and Jess the few things we did together where really fun though. Besides that, I really enjoyed myself living and working with monkeys and I would definitely do it again. Maybe I’ll come back in baby season some day. The vegan food was delicious, a lot and I loved it soo much!

Pros
  • Delicious vegan Food!
  • Cheap program compared to others!
  • Your work is very much appreciated!
Cons
  • No electricity in the volunteer village (could count as pros as well, I actually enjoyed being closer to the nature)
  • Less socializing when there’s not many other volunteers

Life changing experience

Volunteering at the VMF was absolutely amazing!

I went as a solo traveler not knowing what to expect, but I was warmly welcomed by staff and volunteers who quickly made the VMF feel like a second home. Everyone was very willing to teach/ lend a hand whenever needed!

I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to gain knowledge and experience with primates. Come knowing that it is hard work, but 100% worth it.

VMF also offers many opportunities that allow you to explore South Africa such as trips to Kruger park, day trips to the local lodge for a swim, panorama route.

If you are someone who does not tolerate heat well I recommend paying the extra money for a room that has electricity so that you can use a fan!

3 months flew by, and I cannot wait until I can come back to volunteer!

Pros
  • Hands on experience & training
  • Great people
  • Vegan Sanctuary

Vervet Monkey Foundation

During my stay I learned so many things about primates and animal care. I got the opportunity to work in a variety of tasks, from medical help to monitoring integration. The best part was definitely to see the progress of the recovery or integration of the orphans. In this programme, you actually get to see the long-term results from your work. I also made amazing connections and bonded well with other like-minded volunteers. This experience also showed me the beauty of South Africa, both through people and the unique nature!

Pros
  • Learning new skills
  • Amazing people
  • Beautiful nature
