How fluent do you have to be to volunteer?

Posted by Kendra Mctavish 9 years ago

I have taken the first year basic Spanish course offered at my local university. This course started at the beginning with the alphabet and numbers. By the end of the course we were able to speak in the indicative (Present, Preterite, Imperfect), as well as the subjunctive (present). I am not fluent, however this course did greatly improve my skills.

Hi! Obviously the more Spanish you know, the better. Because the town is so rural - there's hardly any English spoken except by the students who have learned it from Sustainable Roots. I went down with about 3 years of Spanish from college. I felt pretty comfortable - but obviously I learned a ton more once I got down there. However, another volunteer I was with in Ecuador hadn't studied any Spanish before going. She used Rosetta Stone to practice before getting there and I think that helped a lot. Ultimately, it's best to ask how much Spanish you'll need during your interview. They're a really good of things!
