My experience working in Spain as a TEFL teacher

My experience working in Spain with the help of TEFL Careers was fantastic! I honestly can’t find any flaws in the program. The teachers and my host family were incredibly supportive and helpful. Most of my teaching was with small groups of around 6–8 children, but on occasion I also helped teach a full class under the guidance of the teachers, which was a great success.

My host family made me feel completely at home and introduced me to many new things, including the Catalan language and Spanish cuisine. They also took me on tours around Catalonia, showing me places like Montserrat, L’Escala, and even a whole new country,Andorra.

I often went on trips to Barcelona, where I met other volunteers. On our days off, we explored Girona and other small towns together, which made the experience even more memorable.

I would definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in teaching for the first time, as it’s a real eye-opener. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to explore Spain, experience the culture through the eyes of locals, and soak in the language, food, and traditions.

I was based in the city of Vic, in northern Spain, in the beautiful Catalonia region.

My experience in Japan

Moving to Japan was a daunting task, but the support from the parent company meant everything went smoothly. The amount of admin and paperwork that needed to be done even months after arriving would have been nearly impossible otherwise.

The company did its best to place us according to where we want to be; I prefer the countryside and they managed to find a school for me there.

Living in Japan has been peaceful and exciting in equal measure. It's reassuring to know that whenever a problem does appear, there is a methodical solution to it somewhere.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Needing to navigate an unfamiliar train system to attend a training event in a different city and getting lost along the way.

In the end I paired up with another teacher from the same program who was also lost and we eventually made it to the venue.
Pros
  • Constant support from the company.
  • You have some say in where you are placed.
  • There is potential for career advancement.
Cons
  • There is an enormous amount of paperwork and admin to do upon arrival.

An Excellent Learning Experience with TEFL Academy!

Studying with the TEFL Academy was an amazing experience! The course content was thorough and practical, giving me all the tools I needed to confidently teach English. I appreciated the flexibility of the online format, which allowed me to study at my own pace while still receiving great support from the tutors. The resources they provided were incredibly helpful, and the certification is widely recognized, making me feel confident in my ability to teach abroad. Overall, I highly recommend the TEFL Academy to anyone looking to start their teaching journey!

My Wonderful Teaching Experience in Sichuan!

I taught at a university in Sichuan, China. The campus was fun and the students were great. It was my first time being fully responsible for my own classes, so I learned a lot about myself and teaching.

School staff was generally helpful but not always. Campus felt generally safe but some aspects were in poor condition.

Overall it was a great experience and I think the students enjoyed the opportunity to have me as a teacher as well. I had plenty of time to travel on weekends and holidays as well.

I would recommend for the adventurous!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Don't assume using a VPN will be an easy trick to access sites while living in China. While they generally work, they often slow down your traffic, and many foreign sites think you are a bot and will block you/limit your access.
Pros
  • students
  • food
  • shopping
Cons
  • internet issues

My AuPair experience in Shanghai, China :)

I’m so happy I got an opportunity to participate in this programme, it is rewarding in many aspects and China being my first international destination makes me even more grateful. It is safe, convenient and full of amazing places and people.
My host family is loving and supportive, I enjoy being a part of their family.
I attend Mandarin classes offline, 3 times a week and it’s amazing!😻
I’m grateful once again to The TEFL Academy and Wanderlust Exchange(China) for this lifetime opportunity; I look forward to more future opportunities in the TEFL world.

At first I thought it would be hard to be considered without a degree but now- all hope has been regained and as an undergraduate; I can’t wait to bag my degree and expand my horizons!! ✈️🤩 👩🏽‍🏫🥳

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Toad and duck meat.

😅😅 but hey, I loved it.
Pros
  • Safe
  • Convenient and affordable public transportation
  • Always a new place to explore
Cons
  • Very humid in the summer
  • Language barrier

Mark's Review

I'm from the United States and decided to take a gap year to teach in Vietnam. I signed up for the AVSE-TESOL program in Southeast Asia because I had never taught before and never been to Southeast Asia before. The process went pretty smooth except for getting m documentation, it's a complicated process and almost didn't have it legalized on time. It takes at least 1-2 months. I was pretty happy with the program except for the cost. I paid roughly $850USD for 6hrs lesson planning, 6hrs of class observation, & 6hrs of practical teaching. But maybe worth it as a new teacher. Pretty much guarantee a teaching job here (but not terrible difficult to find a job by yourself)

Top-quality service

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the job hunt for a TEFL job, then you should definitely talk to TEFL Careers. I honestly didn’t know how to find a teaching position. I didn’t know anything about TEFL before I did my TEFL course so how was I supposed to know how to find a job? I didn’t know what my options were or where I wanted to teach. But TEFL careers walked me through every step of the way. Before I knew it I had a bunch of interviews lined up. And I could basically pick and choose what job I wanted.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
It was a big thing changing up careers and diving into a new industry I knew very little about, but TEFL careers were there to provide all the insights and expertise I needed to not only feel confident about my prospects, but excited about the options ahead of me!
Pros
  • Knowledge
  • Responsiveness
  • Friendliness

My teaching experience in Gwangju, South Korea has been nothing short of extraordinary. The school's welcoming environment, the eagerness of the students to learn, and the rich cultural immersion have made this journey truly unforgettable. From the vibrant classrooms filled with enthusiastic learners to the enriching interactions that have broadened my perspective, every moment has been a testament to the beauty of teaching in a foreign land. Spain 2024 Volunteering

Hello! My name is Brooke Pasmore. I am 23 years old. I am from the United States of America. I live in Florida! Before coming to Spain, I was going through a difficult time. However, with the support and encouragement of my family, especially my dad, I was able to push through and complete the TEFL course.

Shortly after this accomplishment, I received an email inviting me to volunteer in Spain. To say that I was ecstatic would be an understatement. Teaching English as a foreign language in Spain had always been a dream of mine.

From the moment I arrived in Spain, I felt welcomed and supported. My host family embraced me as their own, introducing me to their culture and way of life. My tutor guided me through the challenges of teaching English to non-native speakers, helping me develop my skills and confidence.

But the most rewarding part of this experience has been the connections I have made with my students. Watching them learn and grow, seeing the progress they have made, has been truly fulfilling. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn have inspired me in ways I never thought possible.

I want to thank Simon Jones, the founder of Educados International, for giving me this opportunity. He not only helped me fulfill a lifelong dream but has also shown me the power of perseverance and resilience. I will carry the memories and lessons learned during my time in Spain with me for the rest of my life.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
As someone who suffers from anxiety, the idea of solo traveling was always daunting to me. The thought of being alone in a foreign country, without the comfort of familiar faces or surroundings, filled me with fear and uncertainty.

Despite my reservations, I decided to take a leap of faith and embark on a solo trip to Spain. The thought of exploring a new country and immersing myself in a different culture excited me, but the fear of the unknown loomed large in my mind. However, I knew that to grow and overcome my anxiety, I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone and face my fears head-on.
Pros
  • I had the best host family, tutor, coworkers & students.
  • I volunteered at the best school Monday through Friday & was still able to explore Spain.
  • I ate the best food ever!
Cons
  • Not getting paid.
  • Taught multiple classes, which at times, was overwhelming.
  • Getting sick and figuring out what to do, while being alone & having to deal with that.

TEFL Careers

I'm thrilled to share my personal experience with Henri Cilliers, who facilitated my introduction to Chinese agents for an internship program in Sichuan, China. Henri was incredibly supportive throughout my application process and promptly responded to my queries whenever I needed assistance. I'm now living in Dazhou city, Sichuan, a stunning and mountainous city with delicious food and warm people. I'm thoroughly enjoying my teaching experience here and have already decided to extend my contract with the university for another year! I'm forever grateful to Henri for providing me with this opportunity to explore and pursue my passion for English teaching.
