Intensive course

It’s been almost 2 months since I started the intensive course at GoEast. I have learned a lot since I started, more than I expected, I can already have some basic conversations with people. The teachers are really understanding and helpful with any kind questions whether it’s about learning Mandarin or day-to-day questions related to living in Shanghai. The school provides you with all kind of materials that put you in ideal conditions to learn Mandarin. The program is also very flexible so if you want to take some days off to travel for example it’s not a problem which I think is a big advantage.

Returning to China

I took the Goeast one on one classes summer before starting my masters in the fall. After not having been in China for almost 5 years my Chinese language abilities had gone down significantly, but Goeast help get me back into shape.

Firstly, Goeast helped me with the visa process. It had been a while since I had gone through the process of getting a Chinese visa but that was no problem because I had plenty of support from our first contact to showing up to their office in Shanghai. They are there to answer all your questions and provide the necessary documents.

Secondly, and probably most importantly, Goeast set me up with a Chinese host family. For me this was essential to begin building my Chinese network, constantly be practicing Chinese, learning increasingly more about everyday culture, and more. Having a Chinese family has been great and important to integrating well into Chinese society.

Thirdly, the one on one classes helped me focus on the parts of my Chinese that really needed attention and getting me prepared for life in China as a masters student. I could go at my own pace and whenever I needed extra attention on a subject I had more than I could ask for. Having this time with Goeast when I focused almost entirely on improving my Chinese helped me to form and develop invaluable Chinese studying habits and methods that l've carried with me to this day, many of which wouldn't have been possible without their help. It was a perfect sprint before the marathon that is having a long-term life in China.

Especially for those who place studying Chinese as a high priority, the Goeast classes are second to none. Wouldn't be where I am today without them.

Great program to immerse in Chinese language and culture

I had an incredible experience with this language study program. The assistance provided for the X2 visa application was very helpful and efficient, making the process smooth and stress-free. The teachers are highly professional, and the structured course design ensured I made huge progress in just two months—far more than I achieved in two years outside of China. The friendly and active community was another highlight, offering opportunities to meet new friends and immerse myself in Chinese culture. This program is perfect for anyone serious about improving their language skills while enjoying a supportive and engaging learning environment. Highly recommended!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I bravely joined the school’s KTV event and took on the legendary strong Chinese wine. Let’s just say my singing went from "off-key" to "off the charts" in no time!

Studying in Shanghai

The program is very interesting and custom-made. The teachers and staff are very good, helpful and professional. They are also very flexible and try to help you as much as they can. It is no problem to, while you are studying change program, level or switch between group and private class. This flexibility is a major advantage of studying here. They also organize events from time to time where you are free to choose if you want to participate or not. Besides that, they are located near the metro station in the city center. So it's very easy to reach.

There's no better way to learn Chinese!

After some time learning Chinese, I was struggling to keep myself motivated to continue putting in the effort to learn the language. That’s when I decided to try out Go East’s intensive program. Within a week I was already feeling the progress in those areas that had kept me stuck for so long.

The program had a sound structure but it also allowed for some flexibility to dive into other areas that each student struggled at. It goes without saying that after so many hours with other students going through the same “pain”, you finish the course not just with a much better Chinese level but also having built great friendships. In overall I am extremely happy with the program, the teachers (they are excellent) and the supportive community Go East has created.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Learning Chinese has a lot to do with getting to know their culture. If you decide to embark on this journey, try to combine class learning with cultural events (tea culture, Chinese painting, etc) and hanging out with Chinese people as much as possible.

Fun teachers and fun classmates

I think international people who choose to travel to Shanghai are amazing. Events and group classes at GoEast made me meet a lot of new people to make lifelong friendships and moments I'll never forget. Among them are GoEast teachers, who guided me from HSK2 to HSK4. But they've also helped me change my house when my landlord wanted me out (the GoEast staff helped me get some compensation). I've even been to the wedding of a GoEast teacher (these weddings are not like American weddings... there are over 400 guests!).
Learning Chinese hasn't helped me in my job really, but it has made me closer to people. When you talk to locals in Chinese they open up and with HSK4 I'm really enabled to have conversations now. I'll keep this and the GoEast experience the rest of my life.

What was your funniest moment?
The funniest moments are in-class. It's not really the curriculum but then we for instance talk about animal names: a dolphin in Chinese is a "sea-pig", a hippo is a "box-horse". Then we started making up names for animals which we thought the Chinese name would be.

Great teaching and also fun

I took classes at GoEast from end 2018 to early 2019 and went from zero to HSK2. My teachers Ellie and Myra who where both funny and super good. It didnt' feel like school and the more I learned the more I wanted to do well for them and myself. It's a unique combination of learning but also making it fun and personal. For example we learn terms related to our proffession so that we can use them immediatly and introduce our name and job title a little bit. I did both group classes (HSK1) and private (HSK2). Group classes are fun, I think private class is faster. Both at the Yangu campus because I studied at Fudan. The campus is nice where they also hold events and serve good coffee. I'm very proud of what I learned so quickly and looking back GoEast has made my Shanghai experience better. Jiayou!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The teachers (not just the two I had) also took me out for dinner sometimes and introduced me to new food. Chicken foot is not my favourite!

Amazing and intense experience!

This summer immersion course was an amazing experience. The intensity of the course pushes you to learn quickly and devote enough time to learning Chinese - which requires a lot of effort and dedication. In just 10 weeks I went from being able to do basic introductions to handwrite paragraphs in Chinese characters and conduct and manage everyday errands and situations, eg shopping, traveling, doctor, slight debate.

All the staff at GoEast really wants to help you achieve your goals as a student and they’re also interested in learning about you as a person - making sure you’re doing well inside and outside of the classroom. I got sick for a big part of the course and the whole staff was nothing but supportive and understanding whenever I couldn’t make it to lesson and had to reschedule. They were always messaging me making sure I was feeling better and taking appropriate care of myself.

GoEast is not just a language learning center, it’s a community, a family! They push you hard with this program, and may seem strict with the curriculum - but they do what’s necessary to help you achieve your language goals!

I miss them all dearly

What would you improve about this program?
More emphasis on Chinese modern culture, pop culture for young adults
