Grateful and Transformed

Volunteering with Better Me in Kenya was truly life-changing. I had the privilege of meeting incredible children, experiencing the local culture, food, and way of life, and discovering how much impact can be created with very little. The wonderful staff at Better Me don’t only open doors to volunteering. They open hearts and perspectives! I left Kenya not only grateful, but transformed, carrying lessons of resilience, joy, and community that will stay with me forever. It was journey that reshaped my outlook on giving and what truly matters in life.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was ugali with omena. Ugali is this thick maize dough that you roll with your fingers and use to scoop up the food. Eating with my hands felt unusual at first, but it made the meal such an authentic and memorable experience.
Pros
  • Direct impact with the kids!
  • Deep cultural immersion.
  • Personal growth and gratitude.
Cons
  • Emotionally heavy at times.
  • Adapting to local conditions (food, lifestyle, infrastructure) can be uncomfortable at first.
  • Sometimes you wish you could do more, but you’re constrained by time, materials or program scope.

Impact and memories for life

Working with children and youth in the local community was incredibly rewarding. Through Better Me, I had the chance to support meaningful educational and social projects, assist local organizations, and be part of something that genuinely helps people on the ground. The team was welcoming, the work felt impactful, and the connections I made were unforgettable. I can wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone who wants to make a real difference and grow personally along the way. Go for it!!

Great volunteering experience in Kenya

I really loved my time at Korando. Everyone was so welcoming and the kids are amazing there. I would always return and make an impact there. It is a very inspiring place. It is a great volunteering project. Even though I did not go there again and it's been years now, Korando is still in my heart and I keep supporting this unique place full of love and laughter. I encourage everyone to go there and experience this life-changing place. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to come here.

What was your funniest moment?
Making the kids laugh despite their hard life. We sang and danced together and they even learned some German language words. We even had a great time cleaning the class room:-).
Pros
  • Great team
  • Great country
  • Great kids

Great Organisation and a Truly Supportive and Inspiring Community

I am very happy to have taken part in the BetterMe program. From the beginning, I felt well cared for and supported at every step. The organization frequently asked for feedback and truly uses every opportunity to improve itself. What impressed me most is the strong sense of community—both locally and internationally—where people genuinely take care of one another. BetterMe also works with many local partners to support vulnerable children and young people, which makes the experience even more meaningful. I met wonderful people, always felt supported, and can wholeheartedly recommend this program 100%.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Baobab seeds coated with pink sugar (mabuyu)
Pros
  • Met a lot of wonderful people
  • Travelled across Kenya for 10 days
  • Connected with kids and learned a lot from them
Cons
  • Honestly…no cons

BetterMe

I spent one month with BetterMe. The team and the kids were amazing and the experience is unique. Molly’s cooking was delicious. As you have a lot of time for yourself, you will also get a taste of Kenya, especially on the weekends. The trips are organised from the Team, so you have no effort.

Only thing to consider is the amount of spare time, it may be too much for some. Some days, there was nothing to do for the volunteers, so we had to look for something to do. As I am a teacher, I expected a little more to do.

What was your funniest moment?
Driving a Piki with two friends and broken brakes
Pros
  • Teamwork
  • Experience
  • Organisation
Cons
  • Spare time

Better Me Program Review - August 2025

I spent a few weeks volunteering with Better Me in Kenya in 2025, and it was one of the most memorable parts of my travels. The main thing I was doing was going to the Kisumu Remand Home, where I taught English grammar and writing. I also led yoga classes for kids who had never tried them before. Teaching 20+ kids without yoga mats may sound chaotic, but it forced me to get creative, and the kids' enthusiasm made up for it!! The kids were on break from school, so I imagine that the schedule was a bit calmer than usual. However, this allowed time to spend time with the kids at the center, and have some time for myself as well. This program is also an incredible way to get to know Kenya, which you won't see otherwise if you go to Maasai Mara and leave.

The staff at Better Me are incredible. I don’t have words to describe how kind and supportive they were. Living arrangements were simple but comfortable, and the meals were healthy and filling.

I heavily recommend this program!!

What was your funniest moment?
When Thom randomly appeared back at Maasai Mara because his car got struck bt lightning!!

What a wonderful time if my life

Korando Junior High is a great place that helped me to become a "BETTER ME”. I experienced so many special moments and impressions during my stay: a warm and joyful welcome, a wonderful community of Korando children, and the nature walks to the river.

My most impressive time was spent with the young people of the Remand Home. Helping these guys with life skill lessons was an unforgettable part of my stay. I’m thankful for my awesome time here. I’ll keep it in my heart forever and never forget. Thank you!

Life Changing Experience

I had an incredible time during my three weeks at BetterMe, to teach, play, and learn from the children at the school was simply amazing!

The support from the BetterMe team was amazing, they surely helped with making this time more fun, memorable, and entertaining!

Looking back at this period, it greatly helped me with getting out of my comfort zone and becoming more confident in myself.

Personally, I visited together with my girlfriend. It was a great experience to share together. For the solo travellers: they have a good intake process, and will let you know how many volunteers there will be at the time you plan to go.

What was your funniest moment?
There are a lot of mentionable moments, like karaoke, playing cards, playing football/volleyball.

But the funniest moment was a hike towards a local hill! It was adventurous and beautiful at the same time.
Pros
  • Amazing team
  • Location
  • Interaction

My daughter Jane and I at BetterMe...what an experience!!

My daughter Jane went at Better Me for the thirth time and she asked me to come with her, I was hesistant at first but I'm so glad I went along. As a 50year old Belgian father, I was surprised by everything I saw on arriving in the African continent: another world opened my eyes, a culture shock! I don't have experience in education or teaching, so I proposed to help as a handyman. The first days I gave a helping hand to Lawrence by making concrete, installing doors and a new closet in the kitchen and while we worked, I made connection with the little boys and we played together...football, painting, coloring, hide and seek, catcher,...I made them laugh, they made me laugh...unforgettable those little faces! When they had to work in the garden, I was with them to help and little by little also the bigger boys opened up more and more. One day the bigger boys and girls guided me to hike up to the hill: a challinging walk with a beautifull view over Kisumu and Lake Victoria as a reward...I was one of them :)... In the evening when the boys went to sleep, I was not always sure: should I cry or laugh? As a father from the wealthy Europe I was effected by the situation buth finally I am convinced that despite the minimal comfort, these kids are doing well: they have education and school, they have good food, they receive love from the many employees and volunteers...they have a future, thanks to Better Me! A lot of thanks to my daughter Jane for taking me along and off course to Better Me for the big work they do everyday and for the unforgettable experience they gave to me. One day, I will be back! Guido from Belgium.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The traffic between the Centre and the city...unimaginable! The tuk-tuks serve for transporting everything and the picky-picky is by far the best way to pass in the traffic!
Pros
  • the amazing contacts with the children
  • the country and the way of living from the local people
  • the complete organisation of Better Me

Unforgettable and life-changing 4 weeks in Kenya

I‘m so glad I could do this program and on top of that, share it with 3 friends of mine from university. It was a magical and unforgettable time there, I already miss all the people, the kindness, the positivity, the laughter from the children, the funny and the not so funny moments together - everything about it! Being part of this family and having the chance to be in the middle of it all had a great impact on me. Seeing how the kids live there, but still being so positive and full of life, playing with them, eating chapati with them, learning how to cook the best meals and trying local food, going out with the other volunteers, to dunga beach or karaoke bar, going on little adventures together like a sunrise hill walk or to the Equator - it was all unbelievable.

I also had the opportunity to do 2 weeks of clinical orientation in the Kisumu County Referral Hospital, which was a great experience for us as medical students from Austria. Talking with other students and doctors, seeing the procedures and operations done differently, and overall, the whole hospital and health care system was very interesting to see.

Thanks to everyone for making this time unforgettable :)

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would say to be open for everything! Of course it is a great change of scenery, my life at home is completely different and still I loved getting to know new people, new culture, new food. But you have to be open for it and don‘t be scared to try new thingd - Take every chance you get to see something and just be present. Time flies by so fast so enjoy every little moment :)
And I would totally recommend doing a safari. We did one on the weekend in masai mara and it was breathtaking and a dream come true for me
Pros
  • Getting out of your comfort zone and seeing other parts of the world
  • The openhearted and unbelievably kind people there
  • Great food and the best chef in the house ;)
Cons
  • You will miss it :/
  • Being apart from home and your family, which can be a little scary at the beginning
