A memorable experience

My time with Sayariy was very memorable. You are not heading to a fancy area of Peru but you are heading to a place in which you can make a difference. Lou and the team have set up some fantastic community led kitchens and schools which I helped out on. The kids that I taught were all very inquisitive and keen to learn about the outside world. They do not have a lot of educational resources and so anything that you can teach them goes a long way. The ‘mamas’ and volunteers were great and welcomed me nicely- including a tour of the city and some lovely local veggie food! Trujillo also has a lot offer as a city- I recommend heading down to Huanchaco for some surfing!

Pros
  • Great People
  • Immersive cultural and linguistic experience
  • Lots to explore
Cons
  • Quite a lot of travel in and out of the city

Teaching english in trujillo

Everything was very well organised, and it was possible to get help when you needed it. Very individual time management - you would not be bored if you didnt want to, always something you could do.
I was living with another girl from my country as well, but the families are so nice that its no problem going alone.
The organisation (Sayaryi) is doing the best job in the communities and their work is very admirable. Getting to get a view into the workings of an organisation like it has been very insightfull.

Pros
  • Culture exchange
  • Meeting new people

Working in Trujillo

I had a great experience teaching english in Trujillo, Peru. The work was serious and flexible, which made it really fun for me. If you like children and to teach you will definitely like this. The people in the organization, Sayariy, are very professional, inclusive and sweet, and they will help with whatever you need! They also have other interesting projects you can visit during your stay to know even more about Peru which is relle interesting too.
The best part of my stay was my host family. They are so caring and helpfull, and I really felt like a part of the family.
I couldn’t have wished for more!

Pros
  • Host families = big knowledge of culture and tradition
  • Serious organization
  • Improvement of Spanish skills
Cons
  • Sometimes there is not many volunteers, so you have to be good at taking initiative
