Jason Sarouhan has offered 20+ years of his professional career supporting students pursuing experiential education opportunities all over the world. Together, he and his wife Jane, co-founder of J2Guides, are the only GYA Professionally accredited gap year counselors that have: taken, led, designed, coordinated and directed gap year programs. With the last decade dedicated to gap year counseling, they have each helped several hundred individuals articulate their goals and plan their gap time. J2Guides offers comprehensive and financially accessible gap year expertise in an innovative model that puts student agency and affordability at the forefront of its planning process.
While in college at UC San Diego, Jason took gap time in Africa where he: tracked chimpanzees through Uganda, encountered lemurs in Madagascar and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. He also spent twelve weeks in a conservation & wildlife biology program in Tanzania, learned kiSwahili and lived with the hunter-gather tribe, the Hadzabe. This period of gap time completely reframed his experience of learning, bolstered his self-confidence, and clarified his professional heading.
After college he spent 55-days training as a wilderness & leadership instructor with Outward Bound in North Carolina and began facilitating outdoor expedition programs in: rock climbing, sea kayaking and backpacking throughout California and Baja, MX., as well as cultural immersion & community service programs in Ghana, Thailand, Vietnam and Tanzania. Empowering others to move beyond their preconceived limitations remains Jason’s primary aspiration.
Jason & Jane continue to travel with their daughter and visit programs all over the world, most recently visiting: Bali, Costa Rica, England, France, Hawaii, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and New Zealand. Jason is a proud husband and father, and an avid trail runner who just completed a 175 mile race over 8 days in the Alps. He has served as: Co-chair of the Gap Year Association Standards & Accreditation Committee and member of the Board of Advisers, Keynote speaker at the USA Gap Year Fairs since 2011, as well as a presenter at HECA, NACAC and GYA conferences, and as a Founding board member, coach and running buddy of Girls on the Run Western MA.
