About Program

IMPACT Madagascar offers a minimum two-week volunteering opportunity at our Madiromirafy field site between May and December. Located near the Mandrava gallery forest, this site supports long-term lemur conservation and habitat restoration work.

Volunteers assist with surveys of the critically endangered crowned sifaka (Propithecus coronatus) and the red-brown lemur (Eulemur rufus), the primary species monitored at this site. The region is rich in biodiversity, providing opportunities to observe a wide range of native and endemic fauna.

Volunteers also support ecological restoration and reforestation activities, such as tree planting and forest maintenance, which are essential to preserving lemur habitat. These activities take place year-round, with tasks varying by season. At certain times, volunteers may also assist with environmental education initiatives, including workshops at local schools.

Program Highlights

  • Volunteers have the rare opportunity to observe critically endangered crowned sifakas and red-brown lemurs up close in their natural habitat.
  • Living and working alongside local communities allows for an authentic immersion in Malagasy culture and daily life.
  • Accommodation is provided at a comfortable forest camp with flush toilets, washing facilities, and shared living spaces.
  • The programme is particularly well suited to individuals with an interest in ecology, biology, or primatology who are seeking practical, field-based experience.

Program Impact

By volunteering at Madiromirafy, participants directly contribute to the protection of critically endangered lemur species and the restoration of vital forest habitat. Volunteer efforts support long-term ecological monitoring, inform conservation management decisions, and strengthen locally led conservation initiatives. In addition to field impact, volunteers help build lasting links between research, conservation practice, and community engagement in one of Madagascar’s most ecologically important landscapes.
