Eco-conservation and Heritage Preservation in Scotland
- Scotland
- Inverness
About Program
This very special project combines eco-conservation with building preservation. You'll travel to the north of Scotland and the heart of Whisky Country to the ancient Burgie Estate, home of the Burgie Arboretum, whose unique purpose is to help Scotland's trees and forests resist climate change. Key to this mission is the historic Burgie Glasshouse, an enormous timber greenhouse of the Edwardian period. The glasshouse is essential to the great environmental work of the Burgie Arboretum, but it is desperately in need of repair. AiP Jammers and volunteers restored part of the greenhouse in 2017, but the work continues.
On this unique adventure to the north of Scotland, you will have a part in saving a historic building, while at the same time safeguarding Scotland's trees and forests. You will stay onsite at the Burgie Manor House, while planting trees, repairing the timber greenhouse, learning alongside local craftspeople, and exploring the region.

Program Impact
Hamish, your host, has made it his life's work to help Scottish trees survive climate change. To do this he began the impactful Burgie Arboretum (an enormous tree garden) almost two decades ago, which has become an asset to the local community. To do this crucial work, he uses the historic Burgie Greenhouse to grow on his plants, but the building is in need of repair if the Burgie Arboretum is to continue its climate-change fighting work. Adventures In Preservation is a charity whose global mission is to make meaningful change through the power of restoring buildings. 'Repair a building, restore a community' is our mission, and 'Heritage travel with purpose' is our ethos!
Volunteers of all ages and abilities will have a chance to make a tangible difference to this historic site, and you'll be able to see the results before your eyes as you work. The wide range of activities means there is always meaningful contribution no matter your ability or experience level, and our project officer will work with you to make sure you're doing things you enjoy and find rewarding.
