My month in Kenya was the most invaluable experience I have ever had! I spent my time working with children that live their lives on the streets of Nairobi. I worked alongside the CEO and the Vice chair to give some of the children food.
I felt safe. The NGO leaders have plenty of experience on the streets and clearly maintain a positive relationship with the children. I could sense immediately there was mutual trust!
On my first visit we met with about 26 boys. We ended up taking them to a nearby restaurant to eat. I got to know them - they told me their stories and what they dreamed of becoming. They were so welcoming and I will never forget the smiles on their faces when their bellies were full of hot food.
They are the most resilient and inspiring children I have ever, ever come across. Their world is so difficult, but I could tell that a bit of love and kindness goes a very long way for them.
The highlight for me was that we got chatting to a boy called Ben for a long time and he told us that he really wanted to go back to school. He was a really bright and fun kid. A few days later we managed to get him off the street, a place in a children’s home and a sponsorship for school!
It is the best thing to have ever been a part of!
This program is definitely for people who want to make a difference in children’s lives.
