An Inclusive Summer School Experience at Masaryk University

My experience at the Summer School at Masaryk University in Brno was very positive, both academically and in terms of accessibility. The courses were dense, well structured, and very enriching. What I particularly appreciated was the balance between theory and practice: we first had theoretical lectures, followed by practical sessions, which really helped with understanding. The professors took the time to explain concepts clearly and made sure everyone was following. Being a small group also made the learning environment more supportive. The diversity of academic backgrounds (biology, medical and paramedical fields, from undergraduate to PhD level) made exchanges between students especially enriching.
As a disabled student (cognitive disabilities, autism, ME/CFS, MCAS, HSD, and wheelchair user), I felt very well supported throughout the program. Before my arrival, I had an interview to discuss my specific needs, followed by another meeting with the person who supported me during my stay. The process was smooth and not time-consuming. I benefited from timetable adjustments and academic accommodations such as enlarged font sizes and access to course materials. This made a real difference and allowed me to fully engage in the program.
Beyond the academic side, Brno is a wonderful city: beautiful, calm, and very well connected by public transport. Getting around is relatively easy, even as a wheelchair user, especially with some help. People are warm, polite, and always willing to help, and English is widely spoken.
Brno is also a queer/LGBTQ+ friendly city, and the university felt trans-friendly. As a non-binary trans person, I felt safe both in the city and within the university environment, which contributed greatly to my overall experience.
On a more practical note, food options are affordable and convenient. Breakfasts provided during the program were good and filling, and it is easy to find inexpensive food nearby, including local products. Supermarkets such as Billa, Albert, Tesco, and Lidl are good options for budget-friendly meals.
The only minor downsides were some steep streets, which can be challenging for wheelchair users, and somewhat unpredictable weather, but both were manageable. Overall, this was an inclusive, well-organized, and truly rewarding experience.
