For four months, I had the privilege of teaching English at Education for the Children’s School of Hope in Jocotenango, Guatemala. I’ve volunteered with many organizations around the world, and this was by far my favorite experience. It wasn’t just meaningful. It was transformative.

First, the people.

Susan, the volunteer coordinator, is truly the heart of the volunteer experience. Her warmth, organization, and genuine passion for the mission make all the difference. From the moment you arrive, you feel welcomed, supported, and valued. She has this incredible ability to make you feel both prepared and trusted. You never feel like “just a volunteer.” You feel like part of something that truly matters.

The local teachers and staff are equally inspiring. They are professional, committed, and deeply invested in their students' success. There’s a strong sense of collaboration and respect that makes the entire experience feel sustainable, thoughtful, and ethical.

Then there are the kids.

My feisty estudiantes showed up every single day with curiosity, resilience, and so much heart. They are grateful for the smallest things. A hug. A sticker. A silly game. Watching them learn, grow, and gain confidence in English was one of the greatest honors of my life. To work with these children is truly the opportunity of a lifetime.

And living in Antigua? It’s magical.

Antigua is colorful and vibrant, surrounded by volcanoes and flowers that remind you daily how alive this place is. Cobblestone streets. Morning coffee with mountain views. Processions, art, and every beautiful expression of culture you can imagine. You can walk everywhere. You build community quickly. The rhythm of life slows down in the best way. Simply living there changes you.

Volunteering at EFTC isn’t just about giving your time. It’s about being immersed in a community deeply committed to breaking cycles of poverty with dignity and long-term vision. It’s about relationships. It’s about growth, both for the students and for you.

If you are considering volunteering, I cannot recommend this experience enough. It will challenge you. It will humble you. It will inspire you. And it will stay with you long after you leave.

I am endlessly grateful for my time at the School of Hope and for the incredible humans who make it possible.
