Studying in Granada, Spain

Studying abroad in Granada during my freshman year of college was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Moving to a new country at the beginning of my college experience pushed me far outside of my comfort zone, but it also gave me opportunities that I never could have imagined.

Living in Spain allowed me to travel throughout Europe and experience places I had only dreamed of visiting. Every trip taught me something new, whether it was about history, culture, or simply learning how to navigate unfamiliar places with confidence. Beyond traveling, being fully immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment significantly improved my Spanish skills. I became much more comfortable communicating in everyday conversations and gained a deeper appreciation for the language and the people who speak it.

One of the most meaningful parts of my experience was the friendships I made. I met incredible people from around the world who quickly became lifelong friends. Sharing classes, traveling together, and experiencing a new culture created unforgettable memories and taught me the value of connecting with people from different backgrounds.

Granada itself is a beautiful city filled with rich history, welcoming people, and vibrant traditions. From enjoying tapas with friends to exploring the Alhambra and watching flamenco performances, I was constantly surrounded by experiences that broadened my understanding of Spanish culture. It was also a very walkable city, which made navigating easy. Living there taught me to appreciate different perspectives, embrace new customs, and be open to unfamiliar experiences. I also went hiking for the first time and saw beautiful views!

Most importantly, studying abroad changed my overall perspective on life. It made me more independent, adaptable, and confident in my ability to succeed in new environments. I learned that growth often comes from stepping outside of what feels comfortable and saying yes to opportunities that seem intimidating. My time in Granada not only shaped my college experience but also influenced the way I view the world, making me more curious, empathetic, and excited for future adventures. I will always be grateful for the memories, friendships, and personal growth that came from spending a semester abroad.
