IVHQ-Tanzania

I had a great experience with International Volunteer Headquarters (IVHQ). I volunteered to work in Tanzania, Africa. I volunteered for construction and Renovation. I was a little nervous about traveling so far and at my age (63), I wasn’t sure if volunteering to do construction work was the right choice. Well, it was. I was assigned a school to work in where my co-worker from Scotland and I were trained by the local construction manager to apply plaster to the walls of a structure which would eventually be a kitchen. My co-worker (friend) and I worked well together for several days. During the course of my placement there, I decided to buy school supplies for the headmaster (principal) of the school. I also bought the school soccer balls for the children to play. Both gifts were surprises and the headmaster was very glad. What made the experience great was seeing the faces of the children every day eager to learn and their joy in receiving the soccer balls. I think I made friends for life among the teaching staff and I hope the work I did there showed them my appreciation for being allowed to spend time with them. I think IVHQ did a great job preparing me for the experience and providing me adequate information on location, transportation, conditions in the area and other things to allow me to be successful. I was very satisfied with my experience.

Pros
  • Beautiful country with perfect weather. Wonderful people.
  • Wildlife!!!
  • IVHQ "Staff" First rate!
Cons
  • Would like there to be IVHQ programs for retirees and 50+ (age group) volunteers. Most volunteers were under 30.

IVHQ Tanzania! Best Expereince of my life!

IVHQ made the process of volunteering in a foreign country easy, stress free, and therefore enjoyable! The information provided prior to my travel was incredibly thorough, Nothing was left to wonder about. IVHQ has the on-line portal and checklist that made it seamless to share travel information and documentation. The portal also made it easy to know that I had completed all tasks related to ensuring I had a great experience. And the reminders! Reminders come from the portal so nothing is forgotten. Nothing is left to chance. Staff is also available to answer any questions to put your mind at ease. I also received email from staff two weeks and then one week before I started with further information I would need as I cleared customs and where to go to meet the staff picking me up! Friends thought I was crazy to travel alone to Tanzania, but I was truly never alone. IVHQ was with me the whole time!
Volunteering in a primary school was eye opening. As a retired educator and administrator, I was awestruck by the dedication and commitment of teachers in Arusha...they had no resources with which to teach except chalk and a blackboard. It was difficult to fathom the challenges they faced when we have so much at our fingertips. But kids are kids no matter where they live! The students in my classes were fun, fun-loving, and happy...they worked hard and had the same silly behaviors of my own students. It was so hard to leave them, Arusha, and Tanzania. I will be back!

Pros
  • Connections with people from all over the world
  • Opportunities to explore the rest of Tanzania
  • Support from staff!
Cons
  • No hot water in the Home Stay accommodation

IVHQ has the best support and gives you anything and everything you need to succeed on your volunteer trip. I traveled to Tanzania for the childcare program and it was the best experience of my life. Working at the school everyday and seeing how happy the kids were warmed my heart. I got to teach English and Swahili and so much more! the teachers at the school were so grateful and welcoming. I Love IVHQ and I recommend them immensely. I can't want to go on another trip with IVHQ. IVHQ changed my life and I am forever grateful.

Tanzania May 2023

I had the most amazing experience with IVHQ in Tanzania. The support from THE (the local team) was unbelievable from start to finish. Any problems you had were solved straight away with the help of them. They greeted me at the airport and helped sort out a sim on the first day. They showed us around the town to help us familiarise ourselves too. We were accompanied to placement every day until we felt comfortable to go on our own which was amazing in helping us feel safer. The mamas in the house were the best, they made the most amazing food and were so kind. Also the drivers were amazing, they made all our trips a lot more fun and we felt safer knowing who they were. I had so much fun especially with the social nights helping us get to know each other and I would recommend anyone wanting to go travelling to join a programme like this.

Pros
  • Safety
  • Organised
  • Amazing friends

Women’s Empowerment IVHQ

I loved my time volunteering - from the teaching at my placement every morning, to the new friends and fun places we got to visit! I volunteered at my project for 10 weeks so had a real connection with the girls at the Women’s NGO that I worked at, and felt like I did really teach them valuable things. The coordinators and directors helping us along in this experience were AMAZING and I would come back in a heartbeat. I was shocked that in a city that was very different to home and poverty was so common, that I felt so comfortable here! I felt so at home! Tanzanian people are so kind and lots of volunteers visit Arusha so the place is well equiped, although saying that, you barley see another mzungu (white person), so it’s a very cultural experience - which I loved.

Pros
  • Cheap compared to other organisations
  • Well organised and run smoothly
  • Amazing people and it was always a fun time with them
Cons
  • None of the program fees go to the NGO itself
  • New people come every 2 weeks which is a bit socially draining (but you meet lots of people which is amazing!)
  • If you stay for less time you don’t make much of an impact (and you don’t want to leave anyway!)

Childcare in Tanzania

In March 2023 I spent three weeks in Tanzania doing the childcare program. It was the best experience of my life. The organization is really excellent and the opportunities they offer are endless. The staff was always available and I felt like at home. I had the opportunity to Iearn many things and the opportunity to do a 4 day safari that I recommend. I never felt alone and in general I always felt safe. I recommend this program to people who like to be in contact with children. I would recommend everyone to pack and leave!

  • Organization
  • Safe

A 30-year-old dream come true

Every step of the process was so well taken care of at IVHQ, from registering to 24/7 support on the ground. I felt safe, cared for, and supported in this unique experience. Besides the fact that Tanzania is just an amazing place with very special people. My placement at a local hospital was well vetted, the IVHQ staff regularly checked with me to ensure the appropriate match, and I had extra opportunities for health outreach in the villages, drug/alcohol rehab center, and women's groups. The program was flexible around tourist opportunities around the work schedule - I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, camped on safari with experienced guides, and the staff also was on hand to take us on a whim to local waterfalls, hikes, and restaurants. Highly recommend this program. It was everything I wished for plus more.

Pros
  • Supportive environment
  • Safe 24/7
  • Customized experience
Cons
  • Africa is not as cheap as I expected :-)

Volunteer with IVHQ in Tanzania

My experience with IVHQ was amazing. They have so much information given about what is needed for travelling and what to expect during the program. I barely had to ask any questions as all the information was there and easy to find. They were very helpful and understanding also as I had to postpone my trip due to covid travel restrictions and have also kept in touch since I have completed the program. I would highly recommend volunteering with IVHQ as they are very helpful, kind and friendly both through email and in person.

Pros
  • Reliable
  • Quick to respond
  • Safe

So for me to get from Calgary, Alberta, Canada to the Kilimanjaro airport in Tanzania, it cost about $2800 Canadian dollars through KLM.
