About Program

The Gap Year Program at the Cape Eleuthera Institute is an intensive nine week program focused on leadership, ecology, research, and sustainable development. More than simply a travel or study abroad experience, The Cape Eleuthera Institute's remote location and intentional community living challenges participants to think about our impact on the environment and uses those challenges to maximize their potential and growth in both education and real life skills!

Our Gap Year program allows participants to take a step back to view the big picture; it is a chance to look at where they've come from, where they've gone and create a path for where they would like to go. Our program here at CEI harnesses all of the above and helps give young adults the desire to challenge their own thinking, and develop as critical members of an ever evolving global society.

Gap Year Spring 2012

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah, and I just completed the Spring 2012 Gap semester. I have a feeling you were expecting this, but the experience, in a word, was great. A few things were tough (being away from my family for eight weeks, sharing the dorm with a lot of girls [there were 23 sharing it at one point!], being patient with myself as I learned to SCUBA...). However, the positive definitely outweighed the negative; after all, who gets to wake up in the morning, step outside, and be 15 feet from the beach?? Or know that our "work day" includes diving? Even doing dishes was out of the ordinary - we did them in a room with a view of the ocean that people pay millions of dollars for!
I feel that the whole experience really helped me to better figure out who I am and what I want to do with my life, and it helped me realize that, yes, I do want to do marine science. I would absolutely recommend that other students my age do a Gap semester!
