The Island School

Why choose The Island School?

The Island School offers a transformative educational semester and summer journey. High school students from around the world join our intentional community of teachers and learners seeking to transcend traditional education models. With the campus and surrounding ocean as our laboratories, we partner with a world class science research facility.

Together, we engage in the process of inquiry in order to discover sustainable solutions to real world problems. We explore the framework of Eleuthera’s cultural and environmental landscape through student-centered academics, outdoor programs that support personal growth and leadership development, and outreach programs that practice a project-based approach to local collaboration. The Island School experience culminates in the beginning of a lifelong educational journey, with more self-confident students leaving as engaged global citizens, empowered to be active leaders of their generation.

Gap Year Spring 2012

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah, and I just completed the Spring 2012 Gap semester. I have a feeling you were expecting this, but the experience, in a word, was great. A few things were tough (being away from my family for eight weeks, sharing the dorm with a lot of girls [there were 23 sharing it at one point!], being patient with myself as I learned to SCUBA...). However, the positive definitely outweighed the negative; after all, who gets to wake up in the morning, step outside, and be 15 feet from the beach?? Or know that our "work day" includes diving? Even doing dishes was out of the ordinary - we did them in a room with a view of the ocean that people pay millions of dollars for!
I feel that the whole experience really helped me to better figure out who I am and what I want to do with my life, and it helped me realize that, yes, I do want to do marine science. I would absolutely recommend that other students my age do a Gap semester!
