About Program
Soysambu Conservancy runs a working ranching operation alongside its wildlife conservation program — 6,700 cattle (mostly Boran and Boran/Friesian crosses), 2,000 sheep, and 1,200 goats, all coexisting with the reserve's wildlife. This program puts volunteers and veterinary students directly into that operation, working hands-on alongside trained local staff on livestock health, disease prevention, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation.
Weekdays run a structured schedule: mornings are spent on livestock handling and health checks, afternoons on record-keeping, workshops, or community outreach, with occasional early starts or weekend work for vaccination campaigns and predator-proofing projects. It's real, applied fieldwork — not a passive observation program.
What you'll do
Livestock health & management: marking, branding, and inoculating calves and kids; hoof trimming, dehorning, and tail docking; parasite control and vaccination campaigns; weaning and herd health assessments.
