About Program

As a UMI student, you will spend the majority of your two week program 'immersed' in the operating rooms in Shanghai and Hangzhou, China. Our past participants have witnessed all types of surgeries with physician interaction and mentoring. Examples of past surgeries are but not limited to; open heart, brain, lung, orthopedic, live C section and natural births, hip and other join replacements, and many others.

You will NOT be above in a remote viewing area or watching via broadcast, but you WILL be in the operating room, standing at the table with the surgical team. You will also spend several hours per week shadowing physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

You will also spend time in gross anatomy labs and in educational sessions with current med school students. Overall, the Youth Futures International UMI provides you with an intensive in medicine most people do not experience until into medical school.

China

This trip was an eye-opening experiance. From the culture just out on the streets to especially the culture in the hospitals, this program was unlike anything you could find in America or even in other countries. Not only were we allowed into the patients rooms for checkups and pre and post ops, but we were up close for surgeries and got to see so much ! I witnessed multiple brain surgeries, multiple heart surgeries, an orthopedic surgery, multiple tumor removals, and we were allowed to stand where the surgeons were to see first hand what the surgeons were doing. On top of that, the surgeons were very friendly and explained each step of the surgery as they did it so that we could understand. Overall one of the best experiences someone going into the medical field could do for themselves!
