What is your favorite travel memory?

Bangkok was the first time I had really experienced culture shock in the sense that everything felt completely different to Europe and the United States. Many aspects of Bangkok are new and modern but the floating market and watching the rhythm of daily life was fascinating. From the temples to the incredible landscape on the road to Chang Mai and its nature and wildlife, left a lasting impression on me.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

As a Spaniard I have learned how to see my country through the eyes of our students. The cultural aspects of Spain are familiar for me but what I sometimes take for granted is new and fascinating for students visiting Spain for the first time. Also some of the most simple daily acts such as sharing a meal can ignite the best conversations and opportunities for cultural immersion. I have also realized that educational travel and self discovery are more important than ever and my role is to create moments for students that will last them a lifetime.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The best stories are from students who go back to Spain and visit their homestay family long after the program is over. I have run into my students in Spain as they travel to meet the family they became close to on the Athena program. The bonds and friendships they make truly last a lifetime and they know they will always have a home away from home.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

We are very proud of the Conil program. For students who are serious about improving language skills and want authentic cultural immersion, there is nothing quite like it. It takes some bravery to go overseas and live with a family but in my experience students that open themselves up and are ready to learn take their summer experience with them for a lifetime.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Our entire team is Spanish. Many of us have lived in the US but when our students get to Spain its an authentic Spanish experience in every sense. Its not a tour or a camp but rather a genuine insight into Spanish life and culture and our students truly live like Spaniards, not like tourists. In the short term students enjoy Spain and improve language skills but in the long term we know an experience like Athena will inform and shape the trajectory of their future plans whether it be college or career.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Ultimately its about the people. The level of care we take with our students in the summer, our conversations with parents and schools before, during and after means that every student is celebrated and treated in a special way. Our team are all experienced former and current educators with who take pride in what they do and making sure every student has a memorable stay.
