Why did you decide to volunteer with Hillel in Argentina?
Maggie: I decided to volunteer abroad with Hillel in Argentina specifically because the service was centered around impoverished Jews. I wanted to learn more about Jewish life in South America, of which I knew nothing, as well as help people in need. Volunteering abroad gives a clearer image of what life in a country is like. I have traveled a lot, but traveling as a tourist is much different - I wanted to experience the real Buenos Aires.
Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.
Maggie: We volunteered with three different organizations. Ieladeinu is an organization that works to protect Jewish children that are neglected or abused. We did different arts and crafts with the children to brighten up their days. We painted a mural, as well decorated boxes for their school supplies. We also helped organize clothing and supplies that were donated to the organization for the children, and created picture PowerPoints for the children so that they would have happy memories when they left the organization.
The second organization was a Food Bank for the general population of Buenos Aires. The third organization was Fundación Tzedaká, an organization that works to help the Jewish community in Argentina. They provide education, health, and housing services among others to vulnerable Jews. We specifically worked in their medicine bank, which gives free medicine to Jews that cannot afford it.
What made this volunteer experience unique and special?
Maggie: Our volunteer experience was very special as we were able to help our own community, the Jewish community. We all connected on a different level. It is amazing to see how everywhere in the world, we have the same culture, customs, and practices. No matter where you go, the community feels like family.
How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?
Maggie: This program further affirmed the fact that in the future I want to do international medicine. It made me realize how lucky I am to live in the United States, and how much help is needed in other countries. It opened my eyes to poverty that I had never seen before. Working with orphans also reaffirmed the fact that I want to adopt children in the future. There are so many children that need to be adopted, and I wish adoption was promoted more in the US.
