Alumni Spotlight: Becky Graham

Why did you decide to volunteer with Para La Tierra in Paraguay?

Becky: I decided to volunteer with PLT as I had the chance to carry out my own independant research project. As a recent graduate with very little previous field experience this is a very rare opportunity. I felt it would allow me to learn as much as possible about research, field work and the ecology of the tropics.

Volunteer in Paraguay with Para La Tierra

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Becky: My internship first involved carrying out a literature review on my chosen area of study and setting up the study site in the forest which involved cutting trails and laying traps. When I was able to start collecting data, I would start work about 6am to avoid the heat of the day. During my afternoons and days off I would continue reading journals to help my project as well as helping other volunteers with their field work.

How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Becky: I hope my experience with Para La Tierra will help with my career in conservation and ecology which is an exceptionally competitive field. I plan to do a masters next year and Im hoping that my internship will allow me to get on the best course possible.

I also think that I have gained alot personally, as well as having an amazing time living on an incredibly beautiful nature reserve, I was able to live and work with people from many different countries and learn all about the Paraguayan culture as well as life in the tropics. I hope that on a personal level this will have also made me more employable.
