Alumni Spotlight: Chris Blanchard

Why did you decide to study abroad with GlobaLinks in New Zealand?

Chris: The Globalinks program is known for coordinating a superior experience while abroad. Everything from the paperwork before you start your adventure, to the culture week at Rotorua. The experience exceeded my expectations on every level, and I only wish I could study abroad again.

The Globalinks staff are fun, professional, and stay involved with you during your entire semester. The University of Waikato is located centrally on the North Island, with a short drive to the best surfing in the entire country. The academic environment at Waikato is intimate, hands on, and the professors love exchange students. The student body reaches out to internationals and takes you on hikes, local restaurants, and loves to meet up for a coffee.

What made your study abroad experience unique and special?

Chris: I decided to stay with a host family rather then on campus. I wanted to build a relationship with Kiwi's, and learn about the New Zealand culture from a true local experience. I saw and experienced the true New Zealand culture in a way that my peers did not. Living with locals was a solution to the problem of "I don't know what I don't know" because they are so excited to show you what is everyday for them. I went eeling and cliff diving, and was showed hot springs and sacred Maori carvings.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Chris: My experience in New Zealand helped me get a very nice job after university, expand my worldly perspective, and give me some really awesome stories. While in New Zealand I ran a blog that is full of adventures, stories, and experiences that I created with the intention of being a resource for the future generations of students headed to the land of the long white cloud.
