What is the most important thing you learned abroad?

Hope: Before I went to New Zealand I was the type of person who people did not think would move halfway across the world... by themselves. The most important thing I learned abroad is that anyone can do it and it is the most amazing experience you will have.

I met so many incredible people and went on a six month adventure of a lifetime. I learned how important travel and culture is and remember, if you are afraid of doing it by yourself most everyone you will meet is in the same position.

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

Hope: Do it!!!

What was the hardest part about going abroad?

Hope: The hardest part about going abroad is leaving everything and everyone you know. Packing six months into two suitcases is a challenge but chances are wherever you are going you are going to acquire A LOT so it might be hard but pack light or you will end up leaving things behind!

You also have no idea what to expect (except for what you read about and learn from others) but its difficult not really knowing where you are going to live, wheres the grocery store, how do I get around! But trust me, everything comes easy, especially when there are so many other people in your program in the same position!

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

Hope: There are so many stories that its hard to pick just one but my favorite ones include bungee jumping from the third highest in the world, a road trip around the south island for two weeks, and camping in a strangers front yard.

What made this trip meaningful to you, or how did this trip change your perceptions, future path?

Hope: Studying abroad was the best idea I ever had. It changed my world and caused me to come out of my shell. If you can move to another country by yourself you can pretty much do anything.
