Meet Maddie!

Why did you pick this program?

Maddie: I picked this program because it was the perfect mixture of adventure and culture. Each new day provided an amazing life altering experience. These experiences were things that I would never get the opportunity to do without this program.

What is the most important thing you learned while abroad?

Maddie: I learned how to be a great, independent traveler. Pacific Discovery prides themselves on preparing all of their participants for future travel. We did it all from figuring out train schedules, to finding the perfect restaurant, to finding a new adventure. It is essential to be able to plan, and also adapt at any time while abroad.

What was the hardest part about going abroad?

Maddie: I had to remind myself to become fully immersed in the culture. I had so much fun with the other participants in my group that at times we might have missed out on a more cultural experience.

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

muy thai

Maddie: We were spending one day in a small town in Laos. It was a stopover, before a trek and there was very little to do in the town. Nothing was expected to come from this day. Somehow we found out that there was a waterfall that we could bike to. With vague directions about the waterfall being "over there" around four or five of us began our adventure. The "roads" if you could call them that provided a very bumpy path up to the waterfall. Many times we almost turned back convinced that there was no way that we could be going the correct way, yet finally we made it. The waterfall was beautiful, but I think I enjoyed the day so much because the adventure was such a surprise.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Maddie: Be open to befriending anyone and everyone on your trip. You will be together for nine weeks and grow very close. Closing yourself off from a new friendship is limiting to this unique experience you have been put into.

Tell us about an experience you had that you could not have had at home.

Maddie: This program involves a lot of traveling. Each couple of days is a new city, or town, or village. Being in this situation allows for opportunities that could never be imagined by staying in one spot for an extended period of time, such as at home.

What made this trip meaningful to you, or how did this trip change your perceptions or future path?

Maddie: This trip really shaped who I am and what I am doing with my life. Before I had no idea what I wanted to do. Now I have big dreams of learning languages, travel, and the unknown. I learned I can do whatever I want to do with my life. And I intend to make it as interesting as possible.
