Alumni Spotlight: Theresa Robitaille

Why did you decide to study abroad with GlobaLinks at JCU in Cairns?

Theresa: I decided to study abroad because I knew that I loved Australia since I had already been there before for a different study aboard program in High School. I chose Cairns and JCU because as a Marine Biologist I wanted to be as close as possible to the Great Barrier Reef.

Since Cairns was also located in a Rainforest I decided this would be the best place for me. JCU Cairns did not offer the Marine Biology classes I wanted so instead I took some core classes that I needed for my degree. This allowed me to enjoy my time abroad more since I took classes that dealt with Australian culture. I decided that learning as much as I could about their culture would be an added benefit of studying abroad.

What made your study abroad experience unique and special?

Theresa: I can not say that there was one thing in particular that made my study abroad experience unique and special. Everything and everyone was amazing! I think that by immersing myself in their culture and being open to new things helped me enjoy my time abroad more. I made sure to make as many Australia friends as possible and to be open to experiencing life with them.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Theresa: This experience impacted my future in many positive ways. Personally, I learned so much about myself. I learned how to handle new situations, new people, and how to make a home for myself when my real home is thousands of miles away.

Professionally, I made sure to make as many contacts as possible while I was away. I met everyone I could and made sure to make myself stand out. I introduced myself to JCU's faculty and staff and took part in as many activities as I could. You never know when you may come across those people again and its important to never burn your bridges.

Academically, I excelled in the classes I took and put all the effort I could into them. Even though the grades did not go toward my GPA, I kept in mind that I was there to learn. You never know if this will be your last time traveling abroad and its extremely important to take advantage of all the information that is presented to you.

Overall, this experience helped shape me into the person I strive to become; a knowledgeable and experienced individual who always carries a smile!
