Why did you decide to study abroad with IES?

Teige: IES provides so many opportunities to help you make the most of your experience. The IES center not only offers courses from a wide variety of departments, but they offer classes in both English and Spanish, accommodating all skill levels. Students are also able to take courses through the University of Granada. IES students also choose their housing preference: homestay or dormitory style. I chose to live with a host family, and that was definitely the most valuable part of my study abroad experience. They were so sweet and really eased the transition for me. IES arranged several longer field trips and activities, including an optional trip to Morocco. All of the trips were fantastic and very well organized!

What made this study abroad experience unique and special?

Teige: By studying abroad through IES, I was able to take classes that my small school didn’t normally offer. For example, I took an Islamic Art and Architecture class in which we went on field trips every week to learn in a hands-on way. I studied beginning Arabic, which has been one of my favorite classes in college. All of the professors were wonderful and were committed to helping their students make the most of their time abroad. It was so great to experience Spanish culture through daily life: having breakfast at local cafés, taking siestas, eating Spanish food, going to flamenco performances, etc. The program was flexible enough to allow independent travel, as well. I got to see more of the world than I ever thought would be possible!

How has this experience impacted your future?

Teige: My experience abroad has given me a greater sense of independence and confidence. It has encouraged me to seek out new opportunities in life and to connect with people in new ways. Academically I am able to focus more on valuable learning opportunities, not just strictly grades. I can adapt more quickly to new situations and overall make the most out of what I encounter. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity—I’ll never forget it!
