Why did you decide to volunteer abroad with Give a Heart To Africa in Tanzania?
Sara: I decided to volunteer with GHTA because I had done many international volunteer projects in the past, but had never been to Africa. I had also never used my business skills (what I studied in school) directly in my volunteer experience and the prospect of helping students start their own businesses really appealed to me.
I chose GHTA because it was an affordable, grass-roots option with a direct impact on their community and many opportunities for volunteers to get directly involved and immersed in the Tanzanian culture.
Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.
Sara: During the week you teach classes in the morning, and then during the afternoon you are either running extra help or helping out with the children's program. On Fridays you have the opportunity to participate in home visits where you get to meet student's families and learn more about their lives and backgrounds. The weekends are yours to travel or explore Moshi with other volunteers.
What was the best moment of the trip?
Sara: I enjoyed my whole trip, but my favorite part of volunteering was probably the home visits. Getting to see where our students live, meet their families, and gain some more insight to their lives was an unforgettable experience that I will cherish forever.
If you could go back and do something differently, what would it be?
Sara: If I could go back and do something different, I would have stayed for longer! Tanzania is a beautiful country with so much to see and I will definitely be returning to volunteer and do some more traveling.
