Alumni Spotlight: Violet Kryshak

Photos

Violet Kryshak is from Milwaukee Wisconsin and attends Homestead High School. She is a sixteen year old girl who enjoys playing volleyball, running, snowboarding, shooting archery, and traveling. Violet participated in the GLA program in Tanzania from August 4th- August 17th in 2013.

Why did you decide to volunteer abroad with GLA in Tanzania?

Violet: I decided to volunteer in Tanzania because I thought it looked like a really diverse place different from anywhere I had ever been before. Also my brother who also wanted to go on a service trip wanted to go there so my parents thought it would be safest to send us together.

Tell me about one person you met.

Violet: Mike was one of our mentors (similar to a counselor) and he was really nice and funny. I was in his mentor group and when we would have talks I felt like he really helped us learn more about life and society in general.

What was the best moment of the entire trip?

Violet: The best moment of the trip would have been the first day at the school. The volunteers were just getting to know each other and then we got to meet all the kids who we were going to be teaching and they were just the sweetest.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Violet: This trip has inspired me to do lots of more service work and volunteer abroad trips. While I don't know yet how this could effect my professional life, I do think I want to do something with helping others and possibly with traveling.

Any tips for future participants?

Violet: Any girls: For teaching you are required to wear skirts that go bellow your knee. I would suggest maxi skirts. However for the outdoor service section (planting trees or other similar work) you can wear shorts of any length.
