What has been your career path so far?

As someone who has always had a keen interest in travel, intercultural experiences, education and internationalization, I believe strongly in what Study Abroad can offer and have worked towards developing and enhancing the Study Abroad programme at DCU with the rest of the team.

Since taking on the role, I have developed new tailor-made partnerships with various schools in DCU and also welcome students who wish to enroll directly in the university. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Studies (Management) and completed a postgraduate programme in Digital Marketing at DCU's Business School which I would highly recommend.

Why is language learning and cultural immersion important to you?

On finishing high school, I took some time out to travel and work overseas. Spending time working and traveling in Europe, North America and Australia provided me with the opportunity to meet great people from all over the world. These early friendships allowed me to learn about different cultures and more importantly to learn about different people. I have carried these insightful experiences with me throughout life and continue to celebrate and mark special days with many of the people I met from Greece, France, Italy, Australia, Canada and the UK.

Because I studied at night time while working, I did not have the opportunity to participate in a Study Abroad Programme. I equate my travel experiences with ‘Study Abroad’ and now see first-hand what a great experience our visiting students have when they come to DCU. The wonderful combination of travel and study has inspired so many DCU students and from my early experience.

What does the future hold for DCU - any exciting new programs to share?

Exciting times are ahead for the forthcoming academic year at DCU as the University is currently undergoing an unprecedented period of change and growth through the coming together of St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra (SPD), Mater Dei Institute of Education (MDI) and Church of Ireland College of Education (CICE) with Dublin City University (DCU) to form an Institute of Education.

On its establishment in 2016, the DCU Institute of Education will hold the greatest concentration of expertise in the field of education at third level in Ireland. This represents a major development of national and international significance which will considerably enhance DCU’s capacity to transform lives and societies through education, research, and innovation.

The DCU Incorporation Programme will build on the complementary strengths of the four institutions in delivering a differentiated student and staff experience, underpinned by effective implementation of the transformation process. Once fully completed, new Study Abroad programmes in the area of Humanities and Education will be developed and many additional modules will be available to students for Study Abroad.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful study abroad office?

The key to building a successful Study Abroad office is an efficient departmental organization, particularly at the pre-arrival stage. The office prides itself on its offering of strong support to students from their initial inquiry, throughout the semester, into examinations and beyond.

Equally, great communications and work relationships with other stakeholders on campus are crucial to the success of the programme. DCU’s Study Abroad office has built strong and valuable relationships with schools, faculties, accommodation facilities and administrative support throughout the University. Students benefit from strong guidance and expertise throughout the stay.
