After a few years of working in Marketing in London, Alexa decided it was time to fulfill her travel dreams and headed out solo backpacking around Asia. What is your favorite travel memory?
So many to choose from! One of my favorites has to be an overnight boat trip around the Komodo National Park, Indonesia. Spending two days living on a basic wooden boat with a group of like-minded people, falling asleep with clear views of the Milky Way, and waking up to the sky turning pink with the sunrise, was something I'll never forget!
The beauty of the Komodo National Park, both above and below the water, is mind-blowing! None of us had met each other before the trip but by the end, it was as if we'd known each other for years. It reminds me that you can travel to beautiful places, but when you are sharing that with the right people, it becomes almost magical.
How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?
I have gained much more confidence in my own abilities since working for Paradise Interns. In particular, learning to trust my own judgement, ask fewer questions, and just trust that I know what I am doing – because I do! The challenges of working with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures have also strengthened my patience and my overall understanding of how businesses work in different continents.
What is the best story you've heard from a return student?
I am always excited to hear about the different opportunities that past interns move on to after the internship program – from those who are now working as scuba diving instructors in some of the world's top dive locations to those actively working as influencers, or taking on roles in management positions.
It is great to know that we are able to help people move forward towards the lives and careers they desire. As well as finding new lifelong friendships and sometimes loves!
If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?
We currently only offer 6-month internships, but these are across a variety of businesses. Having completed the internship at a diving center, I would love to re-do the internship at a different placement, specifically one of our NGO opportunities.
I have always been passionate about the charity sector and been involved in several volunteering opportunities. A long-term goal of mine is to be able to utilize my marketing skills to support a not-for-profit, in particular, international development. If I had the chance, I'd love to repeat the internship program with an NGO. Social media and online presence are such powerful tools for charities and can have a big impact if used in the right way.
What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?
Paradise Interns is the only company to offer free Digital Marketing and scuba diving internships at a variety of businesses including leading dive centers, conservation organizations, NGOs, and hostels. We offer people the opportunity to learn new skills, gain invaluable experience, and build the connections needed to live an alternative to the 9-5 lifestyle – whether as a scuba diving instructor, a digital nomad, or a combination of both!
I am always proud of my team. My colleagues continue to inspire me with their positive ambition and the way that they never let any obstacles stop them from moving forward. The moment I see interns begin to take ownership of their brand's marketing, without needing any direction from us is also a very proud moment for every cohort.
What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?
I believe that the biggest factor is knowing your company values and honoring them in everything you do. Working with people and other businesses that have similar values ensures that you remain authentic to your overall vision.
For Paradise Interns, it's all about kindness – we focus on being kind to ourselves, our interns, our partners and our clients. This authenticity has allowed us to grow exponentially in the last year and ensures the integrity of everything we do.
