Title::
Study Abroad Advisor
Having first boarded an airplane at the ripe age of 23, Michael has since jumped headfirst into international travel. As the Study Abroad Advisor, Michael facilitates student enrollment in Panrimo’s study abroad programs and works with both students and international university partners to provide an amazing experience abroad! In his free time, Michael enjoys attending concerts and playing tennis, as the weather in Michigan permits.

What does the future hold for Panrimo - any exciting new programs to share?

Michael: Panrimo’s future will prove to be exciting! We have recently expanded Panrimo’s team to include several new members, with whom I am enthusiastic to continue developing our programs. In addition, Panrimo is also pleased to introduce two brand new program locations: Iceland and Ireland.

As the environmental science community continues to expand worldwide, Iceland has become an epicenter for technological advancement within the field, and we’re excited to offer programs to students who are passionate about gaining immersive educational and practical experiences in the field. Ireland’s unique culture and history are quite alluring to explore as well, especially for those of Irish heritage, and I’m excited to help students explore their own family histories as they study abroad!

What country have you always wanted to visit?

Michael: Considering I studied Latin in both high school and at university, I had always wanted to visit Italy, and in particular Rome, which I had spent years learning about but hadn’t been able to visit firsthand. I was lucky enough to travel with Panrimo to Rome for a few days in 2011, and it was actually the first European city I’d ever visited. The serendipity of having my first experience abroad coincide with visiting the city I had come to remotely admire and longed to visit couldn’t have been more rewarding, or eye opening, and I value the experience immensely. But now, onward and outward! Estonia is next on my list, and I hope to visit soon.

Why is language learning and cultural immersion important to you?

Michael: As a student of English language and literature, spoken and written language has always been at the center of my interests. The idea that language innately influences a given person’s thought processes and even their brain structure fascinates me, and it’s interesting trying to find the connections between language and culture.

In addition, taking the time to embrace new cultures creates the opportunity to view your own in a more objective fashion. It allows us to connect as human beings, not just citizens of different nations.

What about the future of the industry? How do you think study abroad and international education will change over the next 10 years?

Michael: Although I’ve only been involved in the international education industry for 3 years, I’ve already seen changes taking hold. As the number of students participating in study abroad continues to grow, I hope that students with less traditional educational experiences are given the opportunity to explore the world.

I hope to see larger institutional initiatives to make international education available to all types of students, and to encourage these students to explore the opportunities available to them!

Of course, this means spreading the word that education abroad is for everyone, not just a select few.
