Bukit Lawang Trust

The Bukit Lawang Trust is an NGO located in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra, a rural area with limited access to education. We were founded 20 years ago to provide disaster relief in response to a devastating flood, however we have run a center for the past 17 years that offers free education to everyone in our local and surrounding communities. We believe empowering individuals through learning and improving access to education is key to fostering sustainable development, enabling local people to protect Sumatra's precious natural habitat. We believe that if people have more choices they won't need to choose to work in environmentally harmful industries and instead turn to other options.

Our programmes are - Kindergarten, English as a Second Language, Youth Ranger, Sustainable Business and Eco Farming. These all work towards our goal of empowering local people either directly or indirectly. Volunteers support us to deliver all programmes and also work on various other projects.
