Why choose Friends of San Lucas?

Friends of San Lucas supports development in San Lucas Tolimán and the surrounding communities in Guatemala. We partner with a locally-based organization: the Mission of San Lucas Tolimán. The Mission is run by 120 Guatemalan staff in seven program areas, including:

Visitor Program: Each year, up to 1200 visitors travel to Guatemala to learn more about Mission programs, connect with the local culture, participate in service projects, and explore life in San Lucas Tolimán and its surrounding communities. The program is rooted in learning, reflection, and relationship building. All are welcome!

Great Experience

Perfect for recent high school/college grads or anyone looking for a meaningful experience. I spent over a year volunteering, and during that time I got to form relationships with people from all over the US and Guatemala, interpret talks, work on construction projects, and explore the local area. Being with visitors from morning until evening can be tiring, but it's worth it to give them an unforgettable experience. The organization is supportive and transparent. Now I come back to San Lucas whenever I can!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind and willingness to immerse yourself in the local culture. Observe the beauty around you in the people, the culture, and the natural surroundings.
