Fantastic networking and experience builder

The team at Gen.G did a fantastic job adapting to how many people were in the practicum. All of the projects for my team really emphasized marketing and creation, which helped in my path to becoming a content producer. Tremendous opportunities were extended to me through mentors to work with C-levels, creating content. Mentors nailed it, creating an environment where we could collaborate with them easily and have a good working relationship. Experience with scripting out and using team input to plot out ideas for content is something that I will take on further in my career. Getting this opportunity to travel abroad and do tangible work really helps steer my path in the right direction.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Shooting content with professional teams and C-levels.

Unforgettable Experience

A place where you're able to meet/work/grow with like minded individuals within the gaming industry. You'll get to work with Gen.G's talent staff to work towards interesting and new ideas with an industry grade scope. You'll also get time to see plenty of Korea with your fellow cohorts to create memories and friendships that will last forever. However be mindful of managing your free time to work ratio as although a good time is great leaving good impressions are even better. Personally I had an amazing time in Korea working with Gen.G and could recommend it to anyone interested in expanding/honing their skillsets.

Gen.G was an amazing opportunity!

I really appreciated that they were extremely professional when it came to projects, teaching us what it is like to actually work in the industry. We had to come up with proposals that we pitched to our guest speakers, helping us build important soft skills like presentation, pitch-decking, and teamwork as well as hard skills like Canva, Photoshop, and Microsoft Excel. You will only get the most out of this practicum if you take it seriously. Otherwise, you might lose out on opportunities you didn't throw existed.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I really liked the Hanbok and Temple tour experience. I think it really brings to life the history of Korea as well as showing us the scale of what a Korea empire used to be. It is much like walking the Great Wall of China yourself. Also, the beauty of the hanboks shouldn't be underestimated. I highly recommend it to the girls.
Pros
  • Hands-On Projects

My Experience with Gen.G

This experience is a wonderful mix of professional growth, cultural immersion, and building a great network in the esports industry. This three week program brings a deeper understanding into the world of esports beyond just the matches and the pro players. The project you take on during the three weeks offers a first-hand look into the professional side of the industry. The staff are incredible, are willing to share their knowledge with you, and provide you with plenty of opportunities to grow. My cohort was able to meet people from multiple departments, which gave insight into how every piece of the company fits together. The cultural experiences the program takes you on is another highlight. It contextualises and gives you a better understanding how gaming and esports permeate through society.

If you’re seriously thinking about a career in esports and are looking to learn more or want to take the first step towards it, I would highly recommend this program!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The three weeks go by faster than you expect! Make sure to keep a healthy balance between developing yourself professionally, experiencing the city and its sights, and having some down time for yourself.

Once in a Lifetime

This experience was incredible one. The kind of experience that creates a life-changing impact on you for the rest of your life. Esports has always had an impact on my life in some capacity and this was the first opportunity I've had to truly explore what's behind all the players and fame. Gen. G is filled with wonderfully kind staff and a drive behind them that would inspire any student or recent graduate. Throughout the course of our project we were allowed to stumble, pick ourselves up, and grow not only as individuals but as a group overall. Mentors would step in when asked which allowed for this way of learning to work. Outside the office we were brought on cultural experiences that, while it felt touristy, gave another level of understanding of the Korean market and heritage. I came into the program expecting a basic knowledge of the industry but left with a rich understanding of the Esports market and Korean market.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Even if you come in not being a die hard fan, you will be leaving with merch. Make sure to budget enough money for it!
Walking shoes are also a must. Public transit can get you far but there is still quite a bit of walking.
Remember to take some time alone during the program. While you'll be with other students the whole time being together nearly 24/7 the entire trip length will drain you rapidly. An hour or two adventuring alone will help you in the long run.
Pros
  • Unforgettable industry expereince
  • Cultural emersion
  • Strong mentorship/networking
Cons
  • Short program length
  • A bit pricey
