I had an amazing experience participating in the Gen.G Global Academy Practicum in Seoul, South Korea, this past July! As someone who has been involved in collegiate esports for several years, I was excited to get the opportunity to learn more about the business side of the industry and gain hands-on experience with one of the biggest organizations in esports.

Throughout the program, I had the opportunity to work on projects involving marketing, business development, and esports program planning. It was really interesting to see how things operate behind the scenes and learn from people who have experience working in the industry. I also enjoyed getting to meet other students who shared similar interests and goals.

Outside of the professional experience, getting to explore Seoul and experience Korean culture was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. The combination of professional development, networking, and cultural experiences made the entire program really memorable.

Overall, I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity and would definitely recommend the Gen.G Global Academy Practicum to anyone interested in pursuing a career in esports, gaming, or the business side of the industry!

I truly owe everything to this program. I was extremely lost in my career journey, but I knew one thing for sure. I love video games. I took a leap of faith to go across the globe to search for answers. I found my passion with the Gen.G Practicum. The program was completely out of my comfort zone. It is extremely hands on, nothing I ever done in university. But even then, I could lean on my peers and mentors for help.

Putting myself out of my comfort zone was truly something beneficial to my career. I have learned so much about myself and gained so many new professional skills I can take with me as I progress throughout my career. Not to mention I became so incredibly close with my peers and mentors. Even nearly a year after my completion, I still keep in touch regularly with my peers and mentors.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

The theme with my review is getting out of the comfort zone. Korean blood sausage (Sundae) was a must to-do thing for me!

WONDERFUL MENTORSHIP! Staff and mentors were extremely down to earth and I felt that I could ask them for guidance anytime I needed.
Diverse Peers. Students and professionals from all around the world come for the program and it is so wonderful to connect with global students and expand your exposure to other cultures.
Industry Exposure. Hands-on projects and experiences on actual projects given to you by executives that you work alongside with peers.

What other participants should know

Hard work is required. Yes, this is a wonderful traveling opportunity, but this is also a resume builder! Be prepared to learn.
Can feel overwhelming at times. Especially if this experience is new to you, you are bombarded with new things.
Lots of funds needed. The program is an investment, make sure you are financially prepared.

Through this practicum experience, I've managed to learn so much about the esport industry, meet new people who are also passionate about gaming, receive support from my mentors and staff regarding projects I'm working on, and explore much of Seoul and South Korea.

As a college student who saved up to participate, I can confidently say it was a worthwhile and memorable investment. Navigating the language barrier and adapting to the culture felt seamless thanks to constant guidance from mentors and alumni. I was able to expand my knowledge in marketing and business within the esports industry while directly applying what I've learned from college to real-time work. Having sharpened my overall skills, this program was a true game changer!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?

At first, dealing with the language difference and adjusting to the culture seemed challenging, but my mentors were always there to offer support and guidance, which made the experience much more manageable. Additionally, reaching out to former practicum participants was very helpful, as they willingly shared their personal stories and practical advice about living in Seoul. This helped me gain confidence and feel more at ease as I adjusted and began to appreciate life in South Korea.

I had a great time learning more about esports, being closer to it and experiencing things I have never done before. At times I felt slightly in the way of other things for the staff such as other group visits, meetings etc especially as I paid so much to be here, so maybe there could be some more exclusivity. The group projects were good, enough to fill the two weeks we had here, and we heard from some great guest speakers - I definitely learned a lot! Plus, Korea is so beautiful! Overall the practicum was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

Every day was something new, but the fish jelly was definitely new to me!

I had a wonderful 3 weeks with Gen.G at their summer practicum. It was truly an eye-opening experience, and I learned a lot that I would never learn any place else. I met like-minded students who were genuine, and they were some of the most friendliest and funniest people I have ever met. With that, we all got along rather quickly and worked through our projects pretty smoothly. It was a productive and fun time with everyone, and I was able to make long-lasting memories, connections, and friendships with everyone.

My mentors were also just as kind, and they were always there for me when I needed them. Not only are they smart and experienced in their fields, but they were caring and genuine. They would view us as practicum students, but as people too, and that is one of the most important things about good mentors. I feel that it will be difficult meeting mentors like them in the future, so I really appreciated them.

Overall, it was an unforgettable experience in Korea with Gen.G. I highly recommend anyone who is interested in Esports or video games to check this practicum out and consider applying.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

3 weeks is shorter than you think once you are there! Make sure to be in the moment and make every day worth it. Spend time with your cohort and make friends, and also spend some time with yourself as well. Feel free to use your weekends to do some work for your projects, but please also walk around, try new foods, check out shops, go to GGX, and enjoy your time in Seoul too. You can be a hardworking person, but you need to know when you should balance out some fun as well since you are in Korea; you get a lot of freedom, and it feels quite nice. With that being said, that is how you can get the best experience during your time there.
