Unforgettable week learning Spanish at Ixchel

I had an incredible experience at Ixchel. The school is very well organized, and the teachers are intelligent, friendly, and fun. I did five hours of one-on-one lessons each day, and even in just a week, I felt a huge improvement in my Spanish.

I also got to join a cultural field trip with some friends and their teachers, which made the learning experience even more fun and immersive. It was honestly the best learning environment I’ve ever been in, so easy, enjoyable, and motivating. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to learn Spanish!

More than just a school!

I enjoyed my time at Ixchel Spanish School. I studied Spanish there for four weeks and wished I could have stayed longer. I chose to live at the school while attending classes. The room was very comfortable and clean, with plenty of space. I also had three fresh meals every day (Monday through Friday) prepared at the school. This was very convenient and affordable.

There were many activities and trips organized by the school for example, trips to Monterrico beach, Sumpango, Tikal, Lake Atitlán, and more. I also learned a lot of Spanish with the help of my private teacher. The classes were well-structured and the system made learning easy.

The staff at the school are friendly and efficient. I highly recommend Ixchel if you want to learn Spanish and have an amazing cultural experience in Guatemala!

Highly recommend it

I had a wonderful experience studying for three weeks with my teacher Aura at Ixchel Spanish School. Aura has 31 years of teaching experience, plus she has a great sense of humor and passion for teaching. She made the private classes fun and I made a lot of progress with the language. Beyond that, I also learned a lot about Guatemala during our conversations. The office was very helpful the whole time explaining the options and prices at the school. They were honest and organized with the prices, and I thought the classes were excellent value for money. I would highly recommend Ixchel and Aura to anyone interested in learning Spanish. It's a great, supportive environment to learn in, and all the other students I spoke to had similarly great experiences. Thank you and I hope you come back and study with them again!

A Memorable Experience

I once again had the pleasure of participating in three weeks of classes at Ixchel, this time with my grandson before his first year of college. We had rooms at school and dined with students from several U.S. states, China, England, and Trinidad Tobago. Everything at Ixchel is well done by the family members who manage the school, the teachers, and the support staff. The convenience of classes and meals just steps from your room is difficult to match.

The teachers are very committed, able, and good-natured. They enjoy and appreciate each other and their students. All staff are hard-working and accommodating, greatly enhancing the family environment which residents and home-stay students alike recognize and appreciate. Thank you, Dina and Raquel, for our meals, special cakes for departing students, laundry service, and for keeping our rooms and the school clean.

Ixchel coordinates a variety of optional activities locally and trips throughout Guatemala. We enjoyed our excursions and my grandson will always remember hiking two of the three volcanoes which surround Antigua. You can count on receiving good advice regarding restaurants, banking, gyms, shopping, or any special interests.

I very much enjoyed and appreciated my daily four hours of classes with Flory Galindo. She was personable and focused, intelligent, and ALWAYS positive, with a sharp sense of humor. We laughed throughout each class and enjoyed our daily interactions, including breaks with shared coffees and snacks at the Ixchel Cafe and dobladas at a nearby park. Flory was able to answer questions with witty, inventive, and instructional responses, a unique skill set for any teacher, anywhere. Thank you Flory!

Location (Antigua is unique, safe, walkable, and enjoyable), pricing, quality of instruction and materials, and pleasant, hardworking staff combine to make Ixchel a great choice for anyone exploring Spanish instruction options.

Awesome

Thank you Ixchel, Antigua, Guatemala for everything. This was my 2nd school; even better than the 1st. Although I would give them a 5 also.
I appreciated it immensely that when I arrived they knew (took note, respected, and fulfilled my wishes that they asked for in advance). I wanted conversation and Maya culture. I got it.
Every day Kelly and I travelled. She always had a plan and options.
We even visited a farm (coffee or macadamia) in her hometown.
We ran into her sweet parents at the mkt.

What was your funniest moment?
In spite of getting my nylon baller bag on my back in the crowd (Semana Santa - gorgeous; I'd go again with a solid "backpack" in the front, holding it tight) unnoticed slashed and my wallet taken I had a great time. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Pros
  • Kelly, my awesome instructor
  • Spanish
  • Maya
Cons
  • Mostly my "dense" choices:
  • Nylon baller bag on my back in the biggest crowd
  • Bag slashed, wallet stolen
