Kawsay Biological Station

Why choose Kawsay Biological Station?

Kawsay is a Quechua word (indigenous language) that means life. Located in the Peruvian amazon close to the city Puerto Maldonado.
The team at the Kawsay Biological Station strives to protect and manage the life within the conservation concession forest. Activities include monitoring a reintroduced population of black-faced spider monkey in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve and offer education/training and research programs, where every participant is able to learn from inside the forest and directly participate in Kawsay’s conservation efforts.
Staying with us will give you the opportunity to see from the inside how the forest is conserved and studied, through training, monitoring, research and conservation programs and specialized tours.

Spider monkey monitoring

As part of the monitoring team for a group of recent released spider monkeys I lived at Kawsay Center for about 6 weeks and gained invaluable experience in field studies. I became more confident in navigating the forest and was taught how to use radio tracking devices, GPS and collect data on the monkeys. I really enjoyed my time in the Amazon as it was simply amazing to live surrounded by natural beauty constantly. The housing was really comfortable and we were well provided for at all times. Raul is a dedicated and passionate professional who is always excited to share his knowledge and is a very kind and patient teacher. I highly recommend this project to anyone who may be considering it. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience and you will definitely fall in love with the Amazon and all its wonders.

Few days in Kawsay center

It was a very rewarding experience to follow Raúl in his work, to understand the organisation of the center and its challenges to get it started.
I think it is the kind of place that counterbalances negative effects of various explotation types of forest resources, that always push further away innocent occupants. Among other species, spider monkeys seem to be a complex living being and deserves all the attention to be preserved, something that Kawsay center can provide. Congratulations to the team.
A place to keep eyes open and ears attentive.
