My best experience

Kyosei Foundation is a wonderful project that really inquires to help young children to reach a better future, by investing money in the furnitures, a quality education, and better buildings to host the students. I’ve spent almost 3 months in 2021 (already, time flies) in this wonderful association and it was wonderful how the impact we bring was positive, valuable and visible. Steven, his family and all the staff are wonderful people who really believe in this project, and it gives the energy needed to accomplish the different goals.
I can just recommend you to take part of this adventure, you will feel yourself useful and you will help a little bit at your scale. Also, you will learn a lot and feel grown-up after your journey, through all the wonderful people and projects you would have been met/attended.
Asante sana Kyosei, nimekukumbuka sana!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay longer and try to think about a way to help on the long term, by implementing a system for developing the different projects. It

Asante sana Kyosei

Hello !
I'm Juliette, I am french
I was at @Kyosei School as a volunteer during 3 months, from september 2023 to decembre 2023

I dreamed of an african adventure and a humanitarian mission, Kyosei enabled me that. Volunteering with the Kyosei Foundation means truly immersing yourself in local culture while having an impact on the Arusha community !

My missions : teach English and manage communication.
Indeed, in addition to your mission with children and your daily life in a Tanzanian family, your stay also allows you to enjoy tourist activities on weekends. It is also possible to organize different excursions during your stay: safari 🐘, Zanzibar🏝️ or even climbing Kilimanjaro 🗻, everything is possible according to your desires.

Many institutions in Africa and around the world need help, but I can assure you that Kyosei is the right place to volunteer and help in their educational projects through volunteering and fundraising.

Between the conscientiousness of Kyosei Foundation and the warm welcome of these members (founder, teachers, founder’s familly) you can join them with your eyes closed ! Indeed, from the first day, you will feel at home

The only warning a can tell you : it will be hard to leave Tanzania…You will have new friends, a new familly and memories for life…

Kyosei thanked me for what I gave but I think Kyosei gave me more
Asante sana Kyosei
Asante sana Steven

I really want to go back!

I'm Ilaria, a 24 year old girl, from Italy. I have recently volunteered for Kyosei Foundation. I have been in Tanzania for 5 weeks, from the middle of April to the end of May 2024. It has been an incredible experience which left me unforgettable memories. I have always dreamt about being a volunteer in an African school, and Kyosei Foundation helped me to realize this dream. The school director, Steven, is very professional and he helped me step-by-step in the organization of the experience, we had several calls before my departure. It’s good to be prepared, but you don’t have to worry too much, because there everything will be okay. Marie, Steven’s sister helped me in everythink I needed during my stay. She planned good trips during the weekends, in places that tourists don’t know or where they are used to pay much more money, without a local guide. We went to the hotspring, where I could swim and jump in the water from a liana, as you see in the movies! We went to foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, where local people showed us how to make coffee powder from the coffee beans. We hiked with the nice view of Mount Meru and his waterfalls. We went to a museum where the bones of homo sapiens are preserved! There are a lot of possibilities, and nothing is compulsory, you can choose according to your desires, your time and your budget. Steven helped me planning a Safari with a good agency, in one of the most famous National Park in Africa, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. It is a unique occasion to go in the savannah and observe wild animals such as lions, rhino, giraffes... During my stay in Tanzania I was hosted by Steven’s family, in a very nice house. It’s situated in the village, not far from the school, I used to walk everyday with Lucie, a volunteer from French. The people are very kind and welcoming, they made me immediately feel at home. I tasted traditional food, and during my spare time I always used to play with the kids, who made me fell much happy. I think that living in a local family is an invaluable opportunity, because you really live like Tanzanian people, learning their habits, their traditions, and a little bit of their language. Swahili is a very interesting one! In the village you can enjoy everyday life in a small reality where you can easily interact with people, who are more than nice, and you will start to fell home. My volunteering experience consisted in teaching computer to the pupils in class 3 (10 years old). I had class three times a week, but during the other days I could do other tasks, like helping the other teachers in exam preparations, or drawing posters for pre-primary school classes. Moreover, with Lucie, I realized the sewing project, which consists of sewing reusable sanitary pads to donate to the girls of the village. I enjoyed a lot taking part to this project, it is incredible to see how much we can do with very little material, just some towels and some fabric. Working with the sewing machine also made me improving a skill that could be also useful in the future! The school is a place that I’m sure will remain forever in my memories. It’s impressive how much the pupils are motivated in studying, they know it’s important for their future and even at 7 years old they dream about going to university! The children are special, I always wanted to play with them during the break, because they used to give me such a strength and a hope for the future, which is unexplainable. What seems like a small effort for us, is so huge for them, and they will never stop saying thank you with a big smile and shining black eyes. I think that there are so many reasons for doing this experience, and everyone can find a new one. But I’m sure you will never get disappointed! If you have any doubt, feel free to contact me. I think that talking with someone who has been there can be helpful in having a clearer idea about the experience. Moreover, it can be useful in sharing personal doubts about every-day life in Tanzania, like I did with Lucie. Thankyou again Kyosei foundation!

An unforgettable experience !

Hi, I'm 24 years old, and I spent five months at the Kyosei Foundation mainly as a French teacher. I also worked on women empowerment projects and helped the school staff with IT/computer tasks. There is never a dull day at this school—there's always something to do, and it is truly heartwarming to see how much the kids want to learn!

As for accommodation, don't worry about a thing. Steven and his family are incredibly kind and welcoming; you'll feel immediately at home! They always organize activities for the weekends and take us to the most amazing places in Tanzania. You can also go on a safari or try to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and Steven will get you the best deals every time!

I can't express enough how amazing this experience was. I would 100% go back there (and I will, by the way!). I highly recommend you go; you will not regret it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just pack your things and go. Don't overthink it, I swear you will not find a better program or NGO to go to, and they really need you here so just go! Feeling useful is really the best feeling in the world.
Pros
  • Truly helping the community
  • Getting to explore the country
  • Being free to start any project you want
Cons
  • Having to go home at the end...

Why did you choose this program?

I was looking for a volunteering opportunity in Tanzania when I found the Kyosei Foundation. I wanted to find an NGO where ALL the profits would go to people in need, and where I would be useful, not just a tourist, and Kyosei is exactly that!

This program allows you to do many different things, from teaching children to sewing sanitary pads for women and distributing them in the village, and you are always free to start your project.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

I only had to book a flight and send the info! They arrange for a taxi to pick me up at the airport and they even send someone to welcome me! I paid for the visa at the airport, we need to take it before arriving.

Then they brought me home where everything was ready for me! In the first week, they showed me the school and how it worked, and in the second week, I started teaching!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would say: don't be stressed! I know that life here seems so different from your life, but you will quickly realize that it is not so different actually. There is everything we need, and even if you forget something you can buy anything in the city so don't worry. Life as a volunteer is so great, this is a truly peaceful country and you will be warmly welcomed for sure.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

During the week, you'll go to school from around 9 am to 4 pm. You will teach, help other teachers, draw posters for the classrooms, play with the kids, help with computer tasks, and take part in community development projects if you want to. Then after 4 pm, you're completely free, you can go explore the city, take a walk in the village, or enjoy the local beer at Ango bar!

On the weekends volunteers are free, if you want Steven will organize activities for you such as waterfall hikes, hot springs, maasaï market visits, etc... You'll never be bored for sure! You can even choose to climb Mount Meru or Mount Kilimanjaro, to go on a safari, or to discover Zanzibar island!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Honestly, I was afraid I would get bored, I went there alone, not knowing anyone and, of course, not speaking Kiswahili... But I was never bored for sure! You'll live at home with at least three children (sometimes more ahah), and the country is so amazing to visit, every place I went to was truly beautiful and I was never alone, whether it was with Steven, his sister, or other volunteers! I made friends that I'll keep for life, that's sure.

Write and answer your own question.

How long do you recommend to stay?

I would say at least two months. Of course, you can choose to stay less and it would still be an amazing experience, but, in my opinion, two months is a minimum to get involved in the school's projects and make a difference. Some things take time to put in place, and you will see that, in this country, people take their time for sure, you can't rush anything, you have to be patient!
