Maio Biodiversity Foundation FMB

Young community-based sea turtle conservation project in Maio, run by local NGO Maio Biodiversity Foundation since 2012. Maio is one of the 3 main islands for the nesting loggerhead turtles in Cape Verde, the less developed island within the archipelago and until 2012 presented the highest mortality rates of female turtles and nest in the country.

Project's goal is to involve local community in the protection of turtles and nests by distributing conservation teams in all coastal villages during the nesting season. Team members live with local families, protecting nearby nesting beaches and promoting awareness raising events in the villages.
